Huckabee ahead by 12 point in Iowa PPP poll

PPP is supposed to be releasing the results of several polls today. The New Jersey polling results have already been posted on this site.

I'll post some of the interesting information from the Iowa polling results that were released today:

Q14 If the Republican candidates for President next year were Mitch Daniels, Newt Gingrich, Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin, Ron Paul, Tim Pawlenty, Mitt Romney, and John Thune who would you vote for?
Mitch Daniels .................................................. 1%
Newt Gingrich ................................................. 13%
Mike Huckabee ............................................... 30%
Sarah Palin ..................................................... 15%
Ron Paul ......................................................... 6%
Tim Pawlenty .................................................. 4%
Mitt Romney.................................................... 18%
John Thune..................................................... 3%
Someone else/Undecided............................... 10%

Q15 Who would your second choice be as the Republican candidate for President next year?
Mitch Daniels .................................................. 2%
Newt Gingrich ................................................. 12%
Mike Huckabee ............................................... 19%
Sarah Palin ..................................................... 13%
Ron Paul ......................................................... 5%
Tim Pawlenty .................................................. 5%
Mitt Romney.................................................... 9%
John Thune..................................................... 3%
Someone else/Undecided............................... 31%

Meaning Mike is winning both first and second place - unless you count "someone else/undecided" as the second place winner. But, that would have been my answer, too - because no one has earned my vote yet if Mike doesn't run.

More interesting info from the polling results:

Sarah is the top 2nd choice among Huckabee supporters. Mike is the top 2nd choice among Newt (31%), Sarah (42%), Ron Paul (28%), and Mitt (29%) supporters and is tied for 2nd choice with Mitt for Pawlenty supporters.

It looks like if Huckabee decides to run, Iowa is his to lose.

Welcome back Granny!

I guess to say there is a big difference between the results of this poll and the NRC POLL is an understatement.

Both released this week with very different results.

Bosman,
Thank you. I'm not sure how much time I can spend today. Debbie asked me to blog it since she's going to be gone.

I noticed the difference, too. Is anyone familiar with that other polling company? I never heard of them before. From the information they released and their commentary, I figured they must be Romney people. Why else would they have spun it like they did?

Granny,

I don"t know if I'd call it spin. Their data pointed to those results.

I'm looking forward to you posting regularly here as the race heats up.

HaHaHaHa! God knows, Huckabee needs all the help he can get!

Part of the problem is that caucus states are notoriously difficult to poll. There are so many variables to consider. I don't know of any reputable pollster who gets them right on a consistent basis.

And polling more than a year out makes it even harder.

If someone other than those two wants to break through, they HAVE to do it in Iowa or New Hampshire. Otherwise, it will be down to a two-man race by the end of March.

Of course, Mike might not run. It is sure going to be tempting, but there are a number of reasons for him to pass it up, which I am not going to go into presently.

I agree about the discrepancies in these two polls. Who do you believe? Maybe they're both correct and the Iowa voters are just in a fickle when it comes to who to choose.

Another good poll for Huckabee.

"Maybe they're both correct and the Iowa voters are just in a fickle when it comes to who to choose." Haha, that would be a hoot especially if both polling companies polled the same people. Well, it would be nice if we had more polling companies, but here are a few things:

While PPP does have their ups and downs, they appear to have a better record when it comes to Iowa than a few other states (but, that could be luck)

Mr. is Huckabee is leading (the question is how much?)

Finally, it is not uncommon to have so many undecided and quasi undecideds this far away from an election. So while there are trends to be sure, things can and will change a little.
