President Obama wants a national ID card for online commentary

Big brother might be just around the corner. Secretary of Commerce Gary Loche announced on January 7 plans for a National ID Card for the internet.
Their plan is straightforward. Instead of logging onto Facebook or one's bank using separate passwords established with each individual company or website, the White House will take the lead in developing what it calls an "identity ecosystem" that will centralize personal information and credentials. This government-approved system would issue a smart card or similar device that would confirm an individual's identity when making online credit-card purchases, accessing electronic health care records, posting "anonymous" blog entries or even logging onto one's own home computer, according to administration documents.
Here is the biggest laugh of all:

Officials insist this would be a voluntary program and deliver significant benefits to the public.

Notice that it doesn't say PERMANENTLY voluntary!

Full Story HERE.

From the article...

Centralizing access to personal information only makes it easier for the bad guys because it means they only need to steal one key to unlock a vast wealth of financial and personal information. It's likely that the real motivation for this is to ensure the feds always have backdoor access into what people are doing in the online realm.

I would assume that any crazy law like this would have to pass congress first?

I'm not sure if it is considered a new policy rather than a law, it needs congress. Especially if Homeland security deems it necessary.

Did congress pass a law on the new Airport screening procedures?

Is it just because I'm a pretrib pentecostal... or is this really scary?

This is very troublesome. Is the Government going to track people online? What if people go to websites the Government doesn't like or approve of (i.e. Conservative sites)? Am I going to get a visit from Homeland Security because I frequent the Drudge Report, Rush Limbaugh.com, Hot Air and Right Speak?

Unconstitutional. But then again, that doesn’t stop especially this administration.

Scary? Can we trust our Republican public servants to serve the public - and fight this?

You know, I’ve been a Republican for less than a year, and the fact the Left thinks it can get this by Republican congressmen makes me question my decision. I hope the Left is wrong about our team. We better have the guts to fight this.

This is terrible. If this is allowed to happen, it will signify the beginning of the end for all the rights we take for granted.

Welcome to the world of "Shockwave Rider". John Brunner wrote the book about 1970, but here we are with the reality.
