Mike Huckabee is NOT a tea party candidate

Check out this take down of Mike Huckabee from The Liberty Blog.

Be sure to read the article, 'Mike Huckabee is NOT a tea party candidate,' that accompanies the video. It includes a very comprehensive list of tax increases supported by Huckabee while he was the Governor of Arkansas.
- Imposed an income tax surcharge of 3 percent on tax liabilities of individuals and domestic and foreign corporations (Act 38, 1st special session of 2003). (It was temporary until revenues improved. The legislature repealed it in 2005.)

- Increased the sales tax by 1/8 of one percent by initiated act (but it was a personal campaign by Huckabee, who campaigned across the state for it and took a celebrated bass boat trip for 4 days down the Arkansas River holding press conferences in each river city to urge passage of the act)

- Increased the sales tax by one-half of 1 percent (Act 1492 of 1999)

- Increased the sales tax by 7/8ths of 1 percent and expand the sales tax to many services previously exempt from the tax (Act 107, 2nd special session of 2003)

- Collected a 2 percent tax on chewing tobacco, cigars, package tobacco, cigarette papers and snuff (Act 434 of 1997)

- Levied an additional excise tax of 7 percent on tobacco (Act 38 of 1st special session of 2003)

- Increased the tax on cigarette and tobacco permits (Act 1337 of 1997)

- Increased the tax on cigarette and tobacco — cigarettes by $1.25 per thousand cigarettes and 2 percent of the manufacturers’ selling price on tobacco products (Act 434 of 1997)

- Increased the tax on cigarettes by 25 cents a pack (Act 38, 1st special session of 2003)

- Levied a 3 percent excise tax on all retail sales of beer (Act 1841 of 2001 and extended by Act 272 of 2003 and Act 2188 of 2005)

- Revived the 4 percent mixed drink tax of 1989 and added a 4 percent tax on private clubs (Act 1274 of 2005)

- Increased the tax on gasoline by 3 cents a gallon (Act 1028 of 1999)

- Increased the tax on diesel by 4 cents a gallon (Act 1028 of 1999) Note: Contrary to what Huckabee has said repeatedly in debates, speeches and TV shows, the 1999 gasoline and diesel taxes were not submitted to the voters and approved by 80 per cent of them. It was never submitted to a vote. It was the governor’s bill and it became law without a vote of the people. What the voters did approve in 1999 was a bond issue for interstate highway reconstruction but it did not involve a tax increase. Existing taxes and federal receipts were pledged to retire the bonds.

- Increased the driver’s license by $6 a person, from $14 to $20 (Act 1500 of 2001)

The Liberty Blog appears to be a brand new site, started by Eric Odom. Who is Eric Odom? I don't know much about him, but according to the Telegraph, he's #87 on the list of 'The most influential US Conservatives.'

Tea Party organiser

Aged just 29, the self-proclaimed “blogivist” organised some of the earliest “tea party” protests against the Obama stimulus bill. He had a head start, founding DontGo, that rallied support for off shore drilling.

A partner in online media firm Strategic Action, which operates the Tax Day Tea Party website, a focal point for last summer’s protests. After the giddy successes of 2009, 2010 will be a key year for Odom and others in the nascent movement.

Eric Odom voted for Bob Barr.

You are correct. Mike Huckabee is not a Tea Party candidate. Which is to his advantage and perhaps the reason why his general election numbers are so good.

Pablo,
I agree with you yet again. Mike Huckabee is not a TPM candidate. Not even close.

Pablo said...

Careful, Bill. Lol. You are wading into uncharted waters when you agree with me. Lol.

Again with the "True Conservative".

No one has ever mistaken me for a fan of Mike Huckabee, but about the only other term that has less meaning than "True Conservative" has to be "RINO".

What is a "RINO"? A Republican that doesn't agree with me on every issue.

What is a "True Conservative"? Someone who does agree with me on every issue.

The terms are meaningless.

I think that this is half right. In the strictest sense of the term, Mr. Huckabee is not a true Conservative. However, he certainly is more Conservative than Liberal. He is kind of trying to play it safe by not trying to hack off either the Tea Party or the establishment too much. This compromise tactic has made him the slight front-runner for now, but it could also end up back-firing if things get out of hand.

Over the last month, I have kind of soured on him. Before, Craig takes all the credit, my souring on Mr. Huckabee is due to his recent movement to both the Left and to the establishment. He is still the seconded best of the Big 4, but certainly is not my first, second or third back up plan in the event, my camp leader is out of the game when it comes time for my state to vote.

OJ,

When you call Huck a "frontrunner" I fear that you're beginning to give way too much credibility to the early polls, which cycle after cycle have proven to be meaningless. Did you see the chart of the Pew Research data that I posted a few days ago? Less than 20% of the electorate even pays attention at this point. Most people probably just give the pollster a name to get them off the phone. Moreover, the campaign hasn't even started. Once the tea party gets started, and more attention gets put on his record on taxes, clemencies, etc., Huck would be toast. The man isn't even running for president. Did you see Hannity last night? His answers to Sean's questions and his overall demeanor while answering them did not sound like a guy that's eager to get back into the ring.

Haha, RW: Things can and will changed. The front-runner position will continue to change and candidate will come and go as the process goes on, but although it might be somewhat subjective, I would have to call Mr. Huckabee the slight front-runner, in part because of his apparent rural strength in various important states. However, please notice that I am not giving up our camp leader and I am not jumping ship to the flavor of the day.

OJ,

Fair enough, but there are too many things that contradict the polling, like InTrade, his poor fundraising, the lack of passionate supporters on the blogosphere, the fact that I don't know a single Huckabee supporter. Do you know any?

I believe it's too soon to attach the "front-runner" label on anyone.

Don't tell that to Huck. He thinks he invented it.

On whether the tea partiers will oppose him for raising taxes in Arkansas: “No. I was tea party before there was such a thing. If people go back and listen to what I said during the campaign, read the books that I’ve written, what they’re going to say is that, ‘Gosh, this guy was the tea party message before anyone identified it as a tea party’

I can't believe he won in Iowa so easily last time. Are Iowans crazy or smart?

They fell for the folksy charm, aw shucks persona.

Something tells me that maybe this time around they've moved past his phony facade.

Huckabee is the least Tea Party in terms of his positions on issues than Palin, Romney, and Gingrich.

"the fact that I don't know a single Huckabee supporter. Do you know any?" Haha, I do, a number in my own precinct. I also know a real live Pawlentyite. Further, I saw a Romneyite this morning too. Yes, these camps exist in the real world as well as the Blogo-sphere.

OHIO JOE

P.S. best of all I expect to see a number of our camp members in the morning.

Mike Huckabee is people's choice when they know him. In 1980, Mike was the PR point man for helping to organize the 1980 Silent Minority Rally in Dallas, Texas. This Rally got the ball rolling to elect one of America's greatest presidents, President Ronald Reagan. Mike was a long time fan of conservative talk radio. Mike saw in Arkansas a powerful corrupt Democratic Political machine. During the ten years that he served as Arkansas's Governor, he took the state from deep indebtedness to having over $400 million revenue surplus. Even to this day, Arkansas remains operating in the black. Mike grew up watching his state torn by racial bias in the judicial system. While Governor, he attempted to right some wrongs that had been done in years passed. Mike increased the educational standards in the state schools while seeing the number of minorities graduating actually increased. Mike tackeled the problem of being so difficult to get a drivers' license and car title in the state. Mike passed more pro-life laws than any governor in Arkansas' history. Mike upheld traditional marriage definition in the state. Mike is a strong believer in each citizen's right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. He supports our constitution. Mike is for the repeal of Obamacare. Mike is a life-time member of the NRA and a strong advocate of the first and second Amendment of the United States. Mike Huckabee is articulate, honest, open, intelligent, and has the most experience to govern than any other candidate. Mike Huckabee is everybody's President.
