Fox News '12 in 12' Series: Fair and Balanced?

In Fox News attempt to cover all of who THEY feel are potential 2012 candidates for President, they decided to produce a segment on Mitt Romney, who opted out of the interview and IMHO clearly did not want to be included in the series. Perhaps Fox felt that '11 for 12' didn't roll off the lips quite as well as the original? So they decided to go ahead with the segment anyway.

Rather than highlight Romney's achievements in a positive light, Fox chose to play up what they felt were his negatives, including comparing the Massachusetts Health Care Bill to Obamacare.

Now I'm not naive. I fully expected a mention of the MA Health Care Bill. Instead, the majority of the piece seemed to center around this issue with only a few quick blurbs about his successful business background at Bain, Bain Capital, and the saving of the Olympics. No mention of Romney endorsing twice as many mid-term candidates as the other big 3 combined. No mention of him endorsing Chris Christie, Bob McDonnell, Nikki Haley, Terry Branstad, and Pat Toomey way before the others. When they were unknowns and/or long shots.

After viewing the video I was left with a sense that Romneycare is all Mitt Romney accomplished and the rest according to Fox, is insignificant. However, I know better and I know that's not the case. In light of the Romney segment, I believe he made the correct choice by not ACTIVELY partaking in the piece. I don't believe Fox would have done it any differently.

With Fox having 4 horses (Palin, Huckabee, Gingrich, and Santorum) in the race for 2012, it would be to their advantage to try and take the top horse out early. I'm not saying that this is what their plan was, I'm just opening it up as a possibility. It seems that with ALL the tv exposure that Palin, Huckabee, and Gingrich are getting on Fox, they can't seem to pass Romney in the polls and in the race to 2012.

What I'm going to ask readers of this post to do, is to view both Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin's profiles. See if you feel that they covered Palin's negatives with the same enthusiasm and intensity as they did Romney's. Let's see how much time they spent on her QUITTING her job as Alaska's Governor or the scandals that riddled her brief public career.

Mitt Romney:

Sarah Palin:

Well, were they, Fair and Balanced?

Bos, For what it's worth, many Palinistas aren't too thrilled about the Palin piece (Fox coverage, not her performance).

Right Wingnut said...

The so called "scandals" were manufactured by the left to bring her down. I'm certain you know that though. So do the 80% of Republicans who view her favorably.

I think Fox News has a serious conflict of interest because they have 4 potential 2012 candidates who work for Fox News and it would be a major ratings boost for them if any of the four Palin, Huckabee, Gingrich, and Santorum)"guests/employees" of FOX won the GOP nomination.

GREAT Post Bosman!

It's clear that this was meant to be a hit piece on Romney and a fluff piece on Palin.

I don't think Fox News can stoop any lower.

Zeke, Are you kidding me? They used the word "quit" rather than "resign." They trotted out Larry Sabato, who used the word, "polarizing." If it was a fluff piece, those things would not have been in there. By the way, when is the last time someone in the MSM called Obama polarizing?

Very interesting Bos. You should cross-post this if you get a chance.

Personally I thought the peice on Mitt wasn't too bad... meaning I expected it might be worse. But perhaps it's because I've come to expect that from that from media.

In any case, any crowd is going is going to be upset with their candidate's coverage if it anything but glowing. FOX wouldn't really considered 'fair and balanced' if they did a glowing piece on anyone. So upsetting people is going to be unavoidable. But it does make good ratings, and in the end that is what FOX cares about.

I agree with zeke. They went easy on Palin. Playing up the victim.

They only mentioned her quitting in passing. I'm sure they follow the blogs. This for her is as big as clemencies for Huckabee and Romneycare for Romney.

They give her a pass.

Kelly, You've really jumped the shark this time. Are you comparing Palin's resignation from office to a decision that resulted in four dead cops? How utterly pathetic.

I don't know that I can be truly objective. I think they could have included someone who defended Mass. Care and said that it was not Obama Care. In Palin's interview they included a comment from a conservative that talked how brutal the press had been to her. In Romney's piece, Sabato only talked up Romney in the event the economy was the 2012 main issue.

Overall I think Fox tends to be more favorable to Palin because Palin works there. I think it is a conflict of interest.

The media has a lot of power. They can make are break candidates. This is how we got Obama. As far as I am concerned, Palin is the conservatives Obama.

I think this is a topic that will not go away. I would like to see CNN and MSNBC pick it up. Fox News promotes employees for POTUS.

Right Wingnut said...

All right guys. So you think Fox is biased toward it's employees. I see it different, but if you're right, what do you see as the solution?

I think Fox's real mistake in the Romney piece was that they ignored the huge number of endorsements/financial contributions Romney made to get the Republicans back in control of the House and other Republican advances. They made a point of mentioning the huge number of endorsements made by Tim Pawlenty, and Romney had more than 100 more than T-Paw. They also should have pointed out that Romney not only balanced the MA budget, but left it with a surplus. I don't mind that they challenge Romney, but the purposefully ignored some of his more significant accomplishments.

FOX News's portrayal of Mitt was the closest thing they've done in the series to a hit job. There was some balance in it, but it was pretty critical, while others in the series have been mostly fluff pieces.

All Fox News did was confirm Mitt is the guy to beat for the GOP Nomination - hands down. Not say he'll win it, but he is the man right now - more money, better organization, major endorsees in wings, a really good record overall and expert executive experience - the latter which the country needs big time.

Well said RWN! At least some Romneyites have no trouble dreaming up crap against Mrs. Palin and now all of a sudden they are crying because Fox makes them defend MAcare. Rather entertaining to watch.

Did anyone hear them DWELLING on her QUITTING her job?

Did anyone hear them talking about the scandals that riddled her administration?

Did anyone hear them talk about how MANY feel she is the reason we didn't gain the Senate?

BOSMAN said...

Did you hear them mention that Romney endorsed 3 times as many mid-term candidates as Palin and had 4 times the wins?

Did anyone hear them mention Romney endorsed Chris Christie, Bob McDonnell, Nikki Haley, Terry Branstad, and Pat Toomey way before the others. When they were unknowns and/or long shots?

I agree with most comments. They seemed to dwell on Romneycare and none of Romney's many other achievements.

Other than saying Palin is a polarizing figure, the gave her a free pass on he big negative issues.

It’s not fair that Romney wasn’t interviewed where he could respond about the Masscare stuff.

However, they did not speak much of Palin’s accomplishments either, and did repeat the quitter meme.

Btw, I’m a little off put about BOR mentioning today that Mitt’s being a Mormon shouldn’t matter. I totally agree - but if it shouldn’t matter, why keep bringing it up?

OMG...another post about the FOX, anti-Romney, conspiracy theory...I thought the Palin supporters were the whiners?

Why don't you Bill?
I'd be curious to know what they are.
As to the quitter meme, why didn't they go into the reasons she quit? Like they went into details about Romney and the MA Health care Bill.

Ann,
Sarah has been a successful business owner, mayor, oil & gas commissioner, and Governor with a surplus budget. Fired a bunch of corrupt officials, and kicked the oil companies butts in order to get them in line. She has made Alaska, and now even the whole U.S. better. “Death Panels” torpedoed socialized medicine (for a while, and even still weakens it) and she’s been on the front fighting Obama’s socialism ever sense. She even invented the phrase of ‘09, Death Panels, and the word of ‘10, refudiate.

You can find a much better list of her accomplishments at many Sarah sites.

Well JR, from what I have read in your post, you should be comfortable around a bunch of whiners.
