Op-ed: Making Us a ‘More Perfect Union’ Via the Electoral College and Respecting Our Flag

Op-ed:
Making Us a ‘More Perfect Union’ Via the Electoral College and Respecting Our Flag

“Each State shall appoint … a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress.”
 - Article II Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution

With all the rightful brouhaha over our taxpayer dollars being wasted on the media-hyped unneeded recount efforts in key battleground states...efforts put forth by liberal Green Party loon and Hillary shill Dr. Jill Stein...we now have proof positive of why the Electoral College is of critical importance in how we choose our president.

So with that being said it’s now time for a very brief but all-important civics 101 lesson not just so we understand the basics of why and how our Founders and Framers did what they did, but also so we can put the crying of this election’s losers and their whiny supporters behind us once and for all. And this lesson must begin with accepting the basic premise and fact that our Founding Fathers set up our new nation to be a representative republic...not a theocracy or even a democracy as some think...meaning we elect representatives to do 'We the People's' bidding. By doing so this assures that every state’s two senators and given number of representatives become part of what we call the Electoral College...a term that does not actually appear in the Constitution instead having Article II and the 12th Amendment referring to “electors." And this was a very wise move on our Founders and Framers part as it allowed for each and every state to have equal representation in presidential elections.

How so...simply by taking into account the differences in the populations of each state, our Founders and Framers were able to prevent a handful of more populated states from controlling the outcome of any then current or future presidential elections...and in today’s world that prevents New York, California, Texas, Florida, New Jersey, and a mere handful of others from being the only ones to decide who the president will be. And by doing it this way, our Founders made it clear to all that each individual state was indeed of paramount importance to the whole of the republic...to the whole of the federal union...and they did so by their simply allowing each individual autonomous state an equal say, as in the above stated equal representation, in who the next president will be.

And while some at the Constitutional Convention called for what amounts to the concept of ‘majority rule’ when elected our president, our Founders and Framers rightfully reasoned that a direct election of presidents by the majority...by the popular vote of what they called “qualified citizens”...could actually lead to the creation of a monarchy...the very thing they left behind in Europe...and thus render each state basically nothing but managerial entities within the newly crafted federal government. And when all sides of the argument were taken into account, our Founding Fathers saw what became known as the Electoral College as a compromise between what some wanted to be an election of the president by Congress alone or by the afore mentioned popular vote.

So as it stands right now and since 1964...when the 23rd Amendment extended the right to vote in the presidential election to citizens residing in the District of Columbia... we have a total of 538 of what’s called “electors” which correlates directly with the 435 Representatives, 100 Senators, and the three District of Columbia "electors," making up the total of the Electoral College. This means ...and it’s really just simple math...that the first candidate to win enough states to get to 270 electoral votes is elected president and then the same tabulation is done for the office of the vice-president. However, if no candidate receives the needed 270 number then as per the 12th Amendment (the expansion of voting rights) it becomes the job of the House of Representatives to choose the president, with each state delegation (instead of each representative) having one vote. And if no candidate receives a majority for vice-president, then the Senate chooses the vice-president, with each senator having one vote.

And know that our Founders and Framers thought long and hard before “electors” became an integral part of the Constitution. And while today’s Electoral College naysayers continue to claim and continue to whine that the ‘popular vote’ alone should have always been the decider of who becomes president, one just has to look at the pages of history to see just how unwise a decision that would have been then and would continue to be today.

For example, a different version of American history for sure would have unfolded if the great Abraham Lincoln, our 16th president, had never become president for remember he lost the popular vote but thankfully won the electoral vote. And let’s not forget that in one of the most highly contested elections of all time saw Al Gore winning the popular vote but losing the 2000 election to George W. Bush when Florida’s 25 electoral votes went to Bush...thankfully saving us all from freezing to death in shorts and tee shirts as we are now entering what’s known as a ‘little ice age’ as opposed to Gore’s doom and gloom main campaign scenario of impending global warming.

Also, remember that while our Founders and Framers had no way of knowing this at the time they drafted the Constitution, but today’s Electoral College actually keeps presidential elections from turning into knock-out, drag-down, free-for-alls because it makes it highly unlikely that any ‘fringe’ (lunatic) third-party candidate... as in the afore mentioned Dr. Jill Stein...will ever garner enough votes to either win or be the determining factor in who becomes president. And the Electoral College also helps keep in check the up to a dozen candidates who are actually listed on the ballot during any given presidential election cycle, preventing a nightmare of a possibility where a candidate would then only need 10 percent of the total vote to become president, translating into that president representing less than a minuscule percentage of the total American population.

So the bottom line is this, because our Founders and Framers made the designating of “electors” a key part of our Constitution, a Constitutional amendment would be needed to change the way we elect our presidents. And that in turn would have to be passed by Congress and then sent to the States for ratification as a Constitutional amendment with said amendment being proposed by a two-thirds majority in both houses of Congress and then ratified by three-fourths of the States. And know that will not happen as right now the American people are leaning towards true Constitutionalism in an attempt to both negate and repair the damage Barack HUSSEIN Obama’s disrespect of our Constitution has caused our country.

And when you add in that our Founders and Framers carefully thought through every part, process, and ramification of the Constitution not just for them in real time but for future generations to come before they dared to ratify it, you just know the Electoral College process is thankfully here to stay. And this means the losers and their assorted minions best start moving on because January 20th is fast approaching when a president who honors and respects the Constitution will then become the steward of America’s ship.

So while the liberal left and their coloring book and therapy puppy crowd still whine over Hillary’s Electoral College shellacking by Donald Trump...as they continue to voice their anger over their ‘free ride’ and ‘free stuff’ now coming to an end...don’t you just love how they will embrace parts of the Constitution only when it suits their nefarious purposes. And this is exactly what they are doing every time they burn an American flag while saying they are just expressing their First Amendment right to do so.

But do they really have that right to do so...personally I don’t think so...no matter that on June 11, 1990, the Supreme Court declared, as per their ruling in the United States v. Eichman, that burning the American flag was an example of constitutionally protected free speech as laid out in the First Amendment and was thus allowed. But how can that be when the First Amendment clearly states that, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances”...with “peaceably to assemble” being the key words. How can that be when those burning the flag are doing anything but “peaceably” assembling for they know well that the mere act of putting a match to the flag brings forth violent acts from both counter protesters and those countering the counter protesters as well as putting the public in jeopardy for fires can and do spread.

Simply, the Supreme Court got it wrong...horribly wrong... and I truly hope that this ruling is not just revisited but overturned once Donald Trump is sworn in as president for burning our flag is not just a slap in the face to those who fought and died for these people’s supposed right to do so, but is actually a form of hate speech done solely to elicit a violent reaction by those who rightfully see the flag as a symbol of America’s founding principles of liberty, justice, and freedom. Our flag is not merely a piece of cloth as these flag-burning misogynists view it but represents the soul and blood of every American that has come before...of every American alive today who values, honors, and is proud of the principals this nation was founded upon.

By the Supreme Court allowing the burning of the American flag the importance of the Pledge of Allegiance is lost for many for what is a nation without the loyalty of its people ...loyalty manifested in symbols like the flag...symbols used to unite us as a nation... symbols used to define who we are and where we as a nation are going.

And so I agree with President-elect Donald J. Trump that the burning of the American flag...that the desecration of it in any way...should and must be considered a criminal offense and be treated as such. And to that I will add punishable under the full extent of the law...as in serious jail time or even deportation...for if one has no respect for our nation’s heritage or its symbols one simply does not belong here.
