Club For Growth Decides to Back Ted Cruz

The conservative advocacy group Club for Growth is ratcheting up its campaign against Republican front-runner Donald Trump, with its first-ever presidential endorsement, of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.
The group’s political action committee announced the endorsement in a Wednesday statement, calling Mr. Cruz “the best free-market, pro-growth, limited-government candidate in the presidential race.”
“The Club’s PAC has never endorsed in a presidential race, but this year is different because there is a vast gulf between the two leading Republican candidates on matters of economic liberty,” said Club for Growth President David McIntosh in a statement.
Formed in 1999, the organization generally backs conservative, free-trade and free-market candidates. It has long been critical of Mr. Trump’s candidacy over his positions on trade and the size and scope of the federal government.
