Gov Bob McDonnell (R-VA) Could make Virginia the First State to Eliminate it's Gas Tax

Virginia would become the first state in the country to eliminate its gasoline tax under a proposal announced Tuesday by Gov. Robert F. McDonnell.
As part of a transportation plan state officials estimate would generate more than $3.1 billion in new revenue over five years, the Republican governor is also proposing a 0.8 percent increase in the state sales tax. The revenue would pay for maintenance, construction, transit and rail projects across the state.
McDonnell, who announced his plan a day ahead of the General Assembly session, said the plan ties transportation to the state’s economic growth. He said that the gas tax is outdated and that although it is the largest source of maintenance funds, it does not generate enough revenue to cover the costs.
