Reagan Turned the Conservative Torch Over to Gingrich

"There is something truly obscene about the full blown assault on Newt Gingrich’s strong Reagan conservative history from and on behalf of Mitt Romney, who unabashedly ran away from the Reagan legacy and conservative principles in his 1994 Senate campaign and 2002 gubernatorial campaign. Truly obscene."

That’s how William Jacobson begins his article titled: Nancy Reagan 1995: Ronnie turned that torch over to Newt. No mincing of words. Direct and to the point. Jacobson states that the smears on Gingrich have been a shameless sea of lies helped in part by Drudge in an effort to help a desperate Romney.

To set the record straight Jacobson presents a video clip of Nancy Reagan at the 1995 Goldwater dinner. Nancy tells the dinner attendees how Ronald Reagan passed the conservative torch on to Newt Gingrich. Not Mitt Romney who a year earlier had stated in his MA senate race debate that he “was an Independent during the time of Reagan-Bush.”

We have another person coming out of the woodwork to clear Newt’s name. And again, someone with video evidence and courage to set the record straight.

You can't refute what Gingrich has actually said and written, of what we actually have records.

Romney's superPAC didn't claim that he was always for Reagan, rather he knocked Gingrich down a little from his "holier than thou" position, when his previous "heretical statements" are much worse than Romney's. Gingrich's attempts to claim credit for bringing down Soviet Union and Reaganomics has been absurd.

That article seems to be based on one Reagan White House Associate political director's writings in Spectator. I did Associate word search on Bush 2004 White House staff list, and got 70 hits, so one random "associate something" endorsing Gingrich isn't that impressive

In 1995, Gingrich as the highest positioned Republican in the country, Republican leader, of course Nancy would say nice things about him. If Bush had won in 1992, then she would have said the same thing about him in 1995.

The National Review had a good article on the Gingrich/Reagan relationship. See http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/289159/gingrich-and-reagan-elliott-abrams

Oh barf, Texas Apologist is trying to rewrite history again for her favorite philanderer.

She NEVER accepted Romney's conversion to the life movement or gave him the benefit of the doubt, but in two days she has gone all in perpetuating falsehoods about Newt's history on Reagan and on Newt's ethics violations. Oh sure TA is undecided.

As alluded to by Teemu, Romney isn't the one using Reagan 50 times in one debate. Romney isn't the one calling himself a Reagan Conservative, the "True Conservative" and the like. In this instance, Romney is not being deceptive.

And, yes, I've noticed Drudge coming down hard on Gingrich and exposing his deception. At least somebody is, because we know Fox News won't. And we know the rest of the MSM won't ... they'll wait until Gingrich is nominated to drop those hammers.

If you think Romney was against Reagan in that one 6 sec clip, you need to see it in context: http://www.thedailycandidate.com/video/2012/jan/romney_against_reagan.html

ROMNEY WAS NEVER AGAINST REAGAN...

Gingrich was speaker of the House, so it would make sense that she would refer to Gingrich. If Boehner was Speaker of the House..she would have referenced John Boehner.

By the way if you remember, the reason why the GOP took the House....it was because Bill Clinton was in the process of passing a very liberal agenda,(HIlarycare), and the people rebelled. You can't give all the credit to Gingrich..it was more like the circumstances during those times.

I predict that tomorrow TA will be telling us that Newt never did any work or consulting for Freddie Mac and that he never earned one dime from them. Then, as her desperation grows, on Sunday TA will tell us that Newt was the one with cancer and that it was his first wife who filed for divorce when he was convalescing.

"Oh barf, Texas Apologist is trying to rewrite history again for her favorite philanderer." No, you are rewriting history DanL. Back than Mr. Gingrich has good policies and promoted Conservatism. But since that time, he have flip-flopped into a liberal.

This is the secret to Gingrich's success..the ability of his fan club to live in alternative reality. It is just stunning. Reagan and Gingrich did not like each other..they certainly were not an item at the time. I remember those days, and I do not recall any talk of Reagan passing any torch to Gingrich..that is just revisionist history.

Ohio Joe..even back in the day Gingrich was not all that conservative on a lot of issues..such as funding for abortion.

Gingrich was always all about Gingrich..that is just his nature. It is not even really about politics.

Texas Conservative, you've have much courage to bring out the facts & your opinions as others attack you on this & previous posts. Bravo!

As I type this, Rush is also setting the record straight on this issue. I hope the truth & the facts, all the facts, come out on it.

Here in FL, we are facing a barrage of campaign ads from Mitt & Newt. Obviously, the stakes are high here. To bad the partisans on each side are adding ammunition to the circular firing squad, weakening & distracting voters from the real issues. The MSM is rejoicing today in the GOP mayhem.

OJ, wrong again. Go look at Drudge, he has several links to articles written by former Reagan staff who say exactly the opposite of what you and TA are claiming. Tom DeLay has come out with negative statements about Gingrich and his leadership while Speaker. I posted a video today in which Newt speaks ill of Reagan. You really, truly have your head in the sand.

Lionhead, somehow, I find it hard to believe that Rush is setting the record straight on Newt. LOL

I guess it's Nancy's word of kindness over every other person's word who served with Newt, and actual video of Newt dissing Reagan.

That's the alternate reality of the clowns like Rush/FOX/Palin.

Martha,

Once again spouting off about Rush without hearing anything. Rush played what Nancy Reagan said but added that she would not have said it if she had known what Newt was saying about President Reagan.

Good to see that Palin is still on your mind 24/7.

Martha, I agree about Rush. I have heard him lie often enough and shade the truth often enough that I don't have much faith in what he says anymore.

It is kind of hard to forget Palin considering the amount of time she puts in shooting her mouth off.

Coordinated Avalanche Against Newt Doesn't Match My Memory of Reagan Years

"I posted a video today in which Newt speaks ill of Reagan." Yes, because he felt Mr. Reagan was not right Wing enough at the time.
