Is this the beginning of the Newt Implosion?

Today, Romney brilliantly called for Newt to return the 1.6 million he earned as a lobbyist for Freddie Mac, pointing out that Newt was lying when he claims he was hired as a historian.

FOX HOST BRIAN KILMEADE: "Do you believe he's a lobbyist and do you believe that since he took from Fannie and Freddie.... do you believe he should give that money back?"

ROMNEY: "Boy, I sure do. He was on a debate saying that politicians who took money from Freddie and Fannie should go to jail; I mean, which is outrageous in itself. But look, he says he was in a consulting business? That's very different than the consulting business other people have been in. He was in the business of connecting folks with government. He was on K-Street. This was a connection with government kind of business."

He then said Newt's mansion would put Doris Kearns Goodwin's to shame.

"[Newt was] working for Freddie Mac, getting paid $1.6 million. By the way, a very different number than he said in the first debate. He said $300,000, and he was there as a historian. That would make him the highest paid historian in history."

Newt responded by saying, "If Gov. Romney would give back all the money he’s earned from bankrupting companies and laying off employees over the years at Bain, then I would be glad to listen to him, but I bet you $10, not $10,000, that he won’t take the offer.”

Newt, do you really want to go there? Do you really want to force conservatives to defend Romney's private sector success, as opposed to your feeding off the government trough, and parlaying that into millions by selling influence?

Heh. I say bring it!

UPDATE: Folks, I was wrong. Romney is the one forcing the contrast between his private sector success against Newt's use of governmental power to become wealthy. Newt really had no other choice than to respond the way he did. Romney is wisely using one of Newt's greatest weaknesses against him. And yes, it's brilliant the way Romney is goading Newt into making the kind of gaffes he is known for. Like taking candy from a baby. Look for more.

Yeah newt, you took your money from the American taxpayer, mitt did not...he also turned those bankrupted companies you talk about into very successful companies that are 100 times larger than they were when he took them over

Romney should take that bet and then throw the bankruptcies and layoffs in Gingrich's face. What would happen? It would show that those bankrupted companies and those layoffs actually produced 1000s of jobs and saved those companies.

Strange how the private sector works. Since Gingrich has never spent any time there, he wouldn't know.

Frankly, I'm surprised Romney went with this tactic. But, boy did Newt step into it.

Romney is getting desperate with this line of attack.

Martha,

Please...I'm not even a Newt supporter. This attack has been going on for a month, and Newt still continues to climb in the polls. It won't work.

Gingrich falls back on the debunked Democrat talking points re: Mitt sacking companies through Bain?

(Proof Newt's wrong: http://americaneedsmitt.com/blog/category/corporate-raider/mitt-romney-corporate-raider/)

Newt is quite the historian. :P

The point is that Newt is the one saying anyone who collected a dime from Freddie or Fannie should go to jail...THAT is an outrageous statement...the fact that Newt however, is personally immune from that same proclomation is perplexing to say the least. Romney had a JOB, part of that job was restructuring companies...meaning companies who were on the verge of collapse paid BAIN to consult them. THEY paid BAIN and Romney got paid by BAIN...that's called a JOB, and Romney was very successful at his JOB.
Also RW...MOST people don't know anything about Newt...you keep saying these attacks don't work, but they might if the general public actually kenw about them. Only political junkies know everything about Newt and since he's only going to have 6 weeks of scrutiny as opposed to 5 years (Romney), we have to do our best to get the information out there.

How dare anyone vet Newt and make Newty accountable!

Since the LSM and FOX aren't lifting a finger to thoroughly vet Newty then Romney and the other GOP candidates have every right to go after the sleaze bag.

It's not desperate,it's politics!!

RW,

I saw a comment that you made in a thread on Race where you said that Romney was forcing your hand to support Newt. Stop lying to us.

Martha, in the spirit of "bring it," Jennifer Rubin has an excellent post today at her "Right Turn" blog. Title is "Gingrich slips: Shows his nasty, anti-free market self." Excerpt below is right on the mark:

<< For those covering Speaker Gingrich’s (or, as he refers to himself, “Gingrich Senior Aide”) revealing comments about how the private sector works (“bankrupting companies and laying off employees”), please see the below response from STAPLES founder Tom Stemberg:

“Newt Gingrich comes from the world where politicians are paid millions after they retire to influence their friends in Washington. Mitt Romney comes from the private sector, where the economy is built by hard work and entrepreneurial drive. It’s clear that after 30 years as a Washington insider, Newt Gingrich has no clue how the real world economy works. After 25 years in business, Mitt Romney understands how jobs come and go, and what we need to do to get our economy back on track. If Newt Gingrich is our party’s nominee, the choice in next year’s election will be between two professional politicians, two Washington insiders, two people with no experience in the real world of job creation.” – Tom Stemberg, STAPLES Founder >>

Newt, what about all the people who lost their homes and all those in the middle class who are suffering because the housing bubble burst,--in part thanks directly to you?

Barak Obama was elected because of all that econimic mess created by housing bubble burst and Fannie and Freddie, thanks in a big part to you, Newt.

I think we can now blame the election of Barak Obama to Newt Gingrich. Since Newt was so pivotal in lobbying for Fannie and Freddie, Newt can be blamed for the subsequent housing crash and Obama election.

Thanks alot, Newt.

Dan, I prefer him to Romney, as painful as it is to have to pick from these two, but I wouldn't call it full blown support. I'll let you know if I ever send him a check.

I'm still waiting for you to provide evidence that I said I wouldn't vote for any Republican in the general.

Oh come on...Newt sounded like some liberal Democrat yammering about how the evil businessman laid off the workers etc..I fail to see how Romney is forcing anything...Bachmann is also going after Newt..why should he be immune to this sort of criticism?

And you are not the first Newt supporter I have heard yakking about how this or that makes Romney look desperate so he should shut up and get on the Newt bandwagon..

Cry babies..some people can dish it out, but they can not take it.

Jennifer Rubin had another interesting piece on Newt today. It concerns the fact that he and the editor of the Union Leader perpetrated a hoax on the public by pretending that remarks made by Newt Gingrich himself were made by a "Gingrich aide"..in other words they lied.

Sununu had called Gingrich unprincipled and untrustworthy because of an incident that took place back in 1990 in regards to a tax vote and a sneaky maneuver on the part of Gingrich. Well Gingrich wanted to respond but he had made some pledge about remaining above the fray...so he and the editor of the Union Leader concocted this little scheme where they would let Gingrich make the comments and yet pretend it was someone else who had made the statement...an aide.

In other words, someone called Gingrich unprincipled and untrustworthy and he responded by behaving in a way that was unprincipled and untrustworthy. He lied. This is classic Gingrich.

The details can be found at her blog at washingtonpost.com Right Turn... Union Leader Joins the Gingrich Campaign.

No doubt RightWingnut will think this is desperate too..anything other than kissing Gingrich's ass is just not acceptable to his fan club..he can dish it out, but the big chicken can not take it.

One more thing I saw today..a new poll in Iowa...Gingrich is still ahead, but his lead is down to 10 points and Romney is second.

"Oh come on...Newt sounded like some liberal Democrat yammering about how the evil businessman laid off the workers etc." Yes that is true, but it was in response to something that Mr. Romney said that was also questionable. Neither one of the two spoke wisely.
