You won't find grass growing under Mitt Romney's feet

State auditors, county commissioners, sheriffs: no Republican candidate, it seems, has been insignificant enough to escape the glow of Mitt Romney’s affections.

Over the last two years, Mr. Romney has shown up for more luncheons, lent his name to more fund-raisers and donated to more rank-and-file candidates around the country than any of his Republican presidential rivals, building a network of support that could now prove crucial.

Now, as Mr. Romney seeks to solidify the perception that he is the preferred candidate of the Republican establishment, many of his beneficiaries are returning the favor, providing endorsements — more than 1,000 of them, far more than for anyone else — ground troops and other help in the states like Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina that will make or break his campaign.
