Rick Perry received a lot more than $5,000 from Merck

Am I the only one that noticed the strange wording in Rick Perry's response to Michele Backmann? He really did not deny being open to taking money for favors. What he seemed to say was, that he was insulted that she would think he could be bought for such a cheap price.

Actually, It wasn't $5,000 it was closer to $30,000. Perhaps an installment plan?
Rep. Michele Bachmann criticized Texas Gov. Rick Perry at Monday’s GOP presidential debate for requiring sixth-grade girls to get a vaccine made Merck & Co., which donated to his gubernatorial campaigns and employs his former chief of staff as a lobbyist.

Mr. Perry’s response: “I raise about $30 million, and if you’re saying that I can be bought for $5,000? I’m offended.”

Merck has actually given Mr. Perry $29,500 through its political action committee since Nov. 2, 2000, just before then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush was elected president and Mr. Perry, then lieutenant governor, was poised to take over the governor’s mansion. The firm also gave him $22,000 before he signed the executive order in 2007 requiring the vaccinations, according to a fund-raising database is maintained by the Texas Tribune.

Bosman, it is even more than 30k. While Perry was head of the RGA, Merck donated around 350k to them. I read this yesterday, but I don't remember where I read it.

It was $355,000 that Merck gave the RGA under Perry. Here is the source.

Hi Dan,

My linked article talked about that donation.

I didn't include it because it went into the Governors Association till while Perry was in charge. Although he was their finance chairman and chairman at times during that period, there is no direct proof that $352,000 benefited him, so I left it out.

you wont see this on "fair and balanced"

Great find Bosman.

Lets see if anyone calls Perry a liar on Fox News.

My mother in law has been staying with us the last few days. She is an ardent Fox News and Glenn Beck type. We started talking about the nominees and I opened her eyes about Rick Perry. She had no idea about Gardisil, Trans Texas Corridor, Perry's crony capitalism, his past support of NY's gay marriage law, his college GPA... Of course she didn't know anything about Perry because she only watches Fox News, and she is appalled at his record.

She did a follow up on this article because there was so much attention drawn to it: Republicans should be smart - Right Turn - The Washington Post http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/right-turn/post/republicans-should-be-smart/2011/03/29/gIQAOuEjSK_blog.html via @washingtonpost

It is looking more and more like the only SO-CALLED conservative media outlet is refusing to vet Perry.

It looks like it's up to those who want a candidate who can beat Obama. Perry ain't it!
