Rick Perry Doesn't Despise Muslims

Jack shared a link in the chat box today from the Tea Party Tribune posted by, of course, UnkownPatriot. What I found interesting about the article is that the author didn't even go through the facade of pretending only to be against Muslim terrorists. Notice the following lines:
"Rick Perry’s ‘Surprising’ Pro-Muslim Connections (title)"
...
However, there is another side to Perry: his connections to Muslim groups in Texas.
...
Perry has endorsed Texas public high school Islamic history education programs sponsored by the Ismaili sect and attended a dedication of an Ismaili Mosque in Houston in 2005. Perry warmly received the Aga Kahn in Texas in 2002. In a speech Perry gave in Houston, he noted the illustrious family heritage. This despite the reputations of the Aga Khans being profligate wealthy playboys with large palatial estates in Europe and huge racing stables.

As governor he signed off on several Muslim-friendly pieces of legislation, including a consumer protection law ensuring the accurate labeling of food products as halal, or conforming to Muslim dietary restrictions.
...

Perry’s relatively good relations with Muslims have already sparked distrust among some conservative bloggers.

“Scratch him off my presidential list,” wrote RoadTest on the conservative site FreeRepublic.com. “We have already seen what a Muslim enabler in the White House can do.”
I kept waiting for the punch line and didn't come until the end where the usual 'separated by seven degrees' game comes into play. Apparently Perry was endorsed by a Muslim Democratic gubernatorial candidate who is pro-Palestinian. I guess we are supposed to fear that Rick Perry might let Sharia law slip into Texas. I am not sure why, but then again, I don't think logic is a part of the anti-Muslim brigade's modus operandi. I guess Rick Perry's speech yesterday in New York wasn't sufficiently anti-Palestinian for "RoadTeast" and "UnknownPatriot."

As much as I dislike Perry, his reaching out to the Muslim community ought to be a selling point. His predecessor did a fairly good job of that when he was in the White House. Sadly, though, there is a portion of the Tea Party that finds its disgust and resentment in cultural straw men.

We need more of what Perry has tried to do in Texas. We need more of Chris Christie's bluntness (love this video).

Um they are already using Islamic 'Shariah' Law in the courts in Texas, thanks to Perry. Do your friggin' homework.

I'm not anti-Muslim but I'm very cautious with the motives of some "powerful", rich Muslims in our country. The motives of some Muslims are not hidden and they aren't American.

Accusations of some can be wrong. Accusations of others can be extremely valid. (Isn't that one reason we have the Fort Hood shooting because any questioning is "taboo"??)

All good points.

Yes, religious groups can settle some of problems between willing partners through arbitration. Jewish and Catholic people have been doing this for years. Muslims have started to do this in Texas, Minnesota, and New Jersey. I am not sure if this is the same thing as our laws being usurped by Sharia Law. In fact, our laws allow for religious groups to do this.

I have no problem if we as Americans want to put an end to it. But the main offenders are not Muslims. We are not more in danger of succumbing to Sharia Law than we are to succumbing to Halakha law in the Jewish tradition.

Second, I don't want to extinguish a health skepticism. The Fort Hood shooting did occur because no questions were asked. But the anti-Muslim brigade is going way too far with this. There is an already present fear over Muslims in America, and a number of people are stroking that fear in order to sell books. That is not right.

We need to be honest and not hysterical, but we NEED to be wise and not fools in regards to the "goal" of some of the Muslim religion and the "infidels"/unbelievers.

No enemy would be allowed to take us over immediately, but little by little acceptance to "little" things can lead to the same result. That is the mission of some of the Muslims.

We have to be wise, but we need to not be hateful either.

The problem with a Perry presidency (in this area) could be that his tolerances towards Muslims may have a hint of naiveness to it.

A lot could happen in this area in an 8 year Presidency.

Look at England and the problems they're having with the Muslim culture and THEIR LACK of willingness to adapt.
