Tim Pawlenty Dropping out of race for the White House

Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty is dropping out of the race for the GOP presidential nomination.

Pawlenty told supporters on a conference call Sunday morning that he would announce on ABC's "This Week" that he was ending his campaign after a disappointing finish in the Iowa straw poll on Saturday.
The full story is HERE.

The question is, WHO does this help?

He'll endorse Romney within the week.

It's to bad. TPAW was a decent guy. After Romney, he would have been my second choice.

Tim,

Best of luck to you in whatever your future endeavors. I'm sorry that it's you dropping out instead of Michele.

Good get by the way Bosman. Once again, you beat Race to the punch.

It is too bad - he would have been my second choice also. I think if he is truly a "mini-Mitt" then most of his supporters would go to Mitt. Maybe a few to Bachmann.

WOW, I thought he would last a little longer. If he's gone, then Cain and Gingrich, et al cannot be too far behind.

If this field narrows by a few within the next couple of weeks...a Palin entrance could reenergize this most boring of primaries since 1996.

I doubt he will endorse Romney this far from the primaries...unless he is hoping to get a VP nod...which he won't get anyway because T-Paw will not help Romney win the general...if he is the nominee.

Oh, I just saw the question, who does this help? Hmmm. Well, I think it unlikely that Pawlenty voters will be going to Bachmann now after her lies about Tim in the debate. I think his supporters will be split between Mitt and Perry, with Mitt getting more of them.

I to believe he'll back Romney fairly quickly.

WOW, He stole from Romney's pot of votes. I would imagine Romney will get a little boost in the polls.

There's no reason for T-Paw to back Romney right now...especially when he was so critical of him in the past debate. T-Paw is a respected Republican and he has a little sway with some of the Republican electorate...if he ever wants to run again...or have a future in the party he shouldn't show his cards just yet.

Does anyone think that Romney would consider him on his ticket?

I think he'll endorse Mitt too, although I'm not sure of the time frame. Cain will also drop out shortly. Huntsman too.Gingrich will hang around for awhile
. Rudy will not get in because he has a deal with Ricky P. Still baffled by the Arctic Queen. Hannity fawned all over her again but she got only 1 or 2 write in votes in Iowa. So..?
But a titanic battle between Bachmann, Perry and Santorum for Iowa with no significant plays in N. Hampshire and Nevada. Repeated in S. Carolina provides a clear path for Romney as his opposition is split 3 ways

terry,

I don't think so. There would be no benefit for Romney to do this.

Perry in the long run, may be running for VP as we speak.

T-Paw doesn't really help a Romney ticket, of the current field...I'm not sure any of them will...I predict he will go after Rubio. Of course Rubio could easily overshadow Romney and he might not want that. Who knows maybe he would choose Huckabee...

Craigs, Palin's people didn't try and woo the Ames voters...Perry's did. There is no evidence that Rudy and Perry are in cahoots...you guys said the same thing about Palin and that has obviously proven to be untrue.

I respect Pawlenty. His exit after the ASP (Ames Straw Poll) illustrates that, unlike some of the other candidates, he was serious, and in it to win it, not in it to direct the dialogue, or in it to make a point, or in it to be a spoiler.

Pawlenty was my (distant) 2nd choice after Romney. I hope his supporters join the Mitt crowd. I for one will welcome them with open arms.

I wish Pawlenty all the best. He was a good candidate.

In terms of actual accomplishment in government, Tim Pawlenty had the best record in the race. In terms of accomplishing pro-life goals, Tim Pawlenty had the best record in the race. I preferred Mitt Romney's business experience, but Tim Pawlenty was my second choice.

If Tim Pawlenty had lasted long enough in the race to test the waters in the South and shown himself an effective vote-getter there, he would have made an ideal running mate for Mitt Romney. He had legitimate executive experience and could have stepped into the Oval Office prepared to do the job immediately if necessary. He would have helped Mitt Romney win Iowa because he worked so hard there. He might have put Minnesota in play. He was popular with Republicans in Ohio and Florida.

With the quicker exit, he may not be such a good running mate. He is still a good match in terms of age and having the right kind of experience. His inability to connect makes him less appealing although he would still be better at connecting to independent voters than many others.

If the GOP is foolish enough to nominate Rick Perry, Tim Pawlenty may be a good running mate for Perry. Maybe that ticket can win. If Perry is foolish enough to pick Bachmann, that ticket will lose in the general election. Mitt Romney will be too old to run in 2016 and won't come back after losing twice. If he spends another four years building his contacts and staying involved, he could be a good choice in 2016. I don't know whether the country can survive four more years of Obama, but if we do, Tim Pawlenty could be the best choice in 2016.

Perhaps he should have hired Garth Brooks to perfom in his tent.

He said this after the strawpoll:"This is a long process to restore America -- we are just beginning, and I'm eager for the campaign."

You are right. Palin did nothing to encourage write in. Perry's people, and Ricky himself, with his " brilliant " timing, also worked hard for write ins.
Huckabee doesn't like Perry because of Perry's endorsement of Rudy. Rudy likes Perry and could be a stalking horse for Ricky in N. Hampshire. Try this........Perry concentrates on Iowa. Rudy runs in N. Hampshire. Then, Rudy drops out and endorses Perry who chooses Rudy for his VP. Plausible ? maybe , although the so con issues would be a bit Byzantine for me

Good points Anon at 9:32AM.

If Romney picked T-Paw for his running mate, he would be debating Joe Biden. Think about that. How hard would it be to do that? (Make no mistake, Biden did a superb job of debating Palin without making it look like he was beating her up. Something T-Paw failed to do with Bachmann.)

Still, I think Romney will look elsewhere. Rubio is a good choice. Certainly, you don't get successful in business without excellent choices for your support team.

It's a crying shame that Pawlenty could not connect with voters, because he's a heck of a lot more qualified, and a much MUCH better candidate than Perry--who apparently can connect with voters. Gag.
