Mitt Romney in 1994: Contract With America is “Not a good idea”

Update: I posted this a while back, but since there's a good chance it will come up in tonight's debate, I bumped it. Newt was asked about Romney's opposition to the contract yesterday.
Gingrich also was asked about Mitt Romney not supporting the Contract with America back in the 1990s, and he replied:
"That's not totally fair. He was running to the left of Ted Kennedy in 1994, and he said flatly, he wasn't for the Reagan-Bush policies...he couldn't possibly before the Contract. Because how to you (run) in Massachusetts to the left of Ted Kennedy favoring the Gingich contract?"
Ouch...

RW, sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

There's a huge difference in style between Palin and Romney, as you know. At least the new Palin. The old Sarah was happy to cooperate with democrats, and was actually a very moderate governor. Remember how excited she was that Obama agreed with her on her windfall profits tax?

The new Sarah is nothing more than a firebrand whose main goal is to call Obama names, and get attention.

Romney, on the other hand, realizes that name-calling doesn't get you very far. He realizes to accomplish anything you need to attract people to your cause rather than piss the other side off all the time. (pardon my french) In other words, the real world.

Just one reason why Palin can never beat him, if she gets in. People want solutions, not rhetoric.

Martha,

Ok...then perhaps Romney should campaign on his opposition to the Contract for America to show off his bi-partison cred.

Anon,

I agree with TC in the other thread. Sign your effing name so we know who we're talking to.

Give it up, Right Wingnut. Mitt's past remarks from 1994 are beyond old news.

Move on with your life.

"He realizes to accomplish anything you need to attract people to your cause rather than piss the other side off all the time." Haha, so you are proud that he worked with the Dems to sabotage capitalism?

Great VIDEO!

Maybe I'll use iy if I do a Romney piece about his appeal to Independents.

YOU KNOW, those pesky racals that you'll need to win over if you want to be President.

THANKS RWN!

Although I agree with the Contract With America, I can see this video helping Romney.

Especially in light with what's going on now with the debt ceiling.

I was as anti-Clinton as anybody, and I agreed with (and still agree with) the principles in the contract with America. That being said, the best way to approach a negotiation is not to have a "winner" and a "loser," but rather for both sides to feel like they won. The antagonistic approach between Democrats and Republicans leaves us always with winners and losers, and the media, because it tends to favor the liberals, always gives the democrats the favorable coverage, thus putting Republicans on the defensive, which is a losing position.

Romney's approach to negotiations is wise. This country has been very divided over the past couple of decades. The Republicans hated Clinton, the Democrats hated W even more, now the Republicans hate Obama still more. I am ready for a uniter, so we can avoid vilification of political opponents.

I am probably more conservative than Romney, but I think I would prefer someone slightly to my left who will approach negotiations with a "win-win" attitude, rather than someone who is to my right who will continue our recent trend of dividing our great nation.

Noelle, I hate to break it to you, but the country has ALWAYS been very divided politically. Perhaps less so during the World Wars.

I think you'll have to believe me on this. It may have seemed less divided to you growing up because the press are almost all lefties, and they had a lot of power while you were growing up. Reagan was their first serious threat, and even then, Reagan NEVER had control of the House during his 8 years.

During my college years, I became aware that better than 80 percent of the press were registered Dems, and I realized that that's why their opinions about things rarely coincided with mine. Say what you want about the New Media, but it is important to have outlets to approach news differently. At least now we have OPTIONS! We don't have to watch Dan Rather's biased press coverage of the military, where he covered a "combat" vet that apparently wasn't a vet at all--and no one said a word.

My mother always says, "The only good thing about 'the good old days' is that they are over." Support whoever you like for whatever reason you like, just remember that part of the reason the Dems accuse us of disharmony isn't because there is less harmony, it's because they can't control everything that is said about them like they did in the past. This is something I am truly grateful for!

Great statement. Romney was right about divisiveness, but wrong to not back the concepts w/in it. Although Contract with America was full of great policy, it was divisive in the way it was presented and pushed. Regardless, that was 17 years ago, which is far less significant than Newt's liberal positions of 6 months ago. Right now we need a President that can bring people together to achieve bi-partisan conservative success. Newt can't deal w/his own party. He can't help taking cheap shots at Ryan, a major conservative reformer. I sure hope this clown never has to persuade a Dem.

Lets have a list of actual issues on which Romney actually ran to the left of Kennedy. Ohhh, that's right, there aren't any. The best anyone has ever come up with is to misquote Romney on gay rights. I award Newt and RW each a Pinocchio on this one, but its hardly Newt's first.

GR,

Even if what you say is accurate, why do I get a Pinocchio? All I did was post a transcript of what Newt said, and suggest it may come up tonight?

I was surprised to see my comment from July up. Sometimes I amaze myself. :)

I can't resist saying, "Isn't Mitt good looking in that picture? Actually, in all of his pictures?" And, no, that is NOT why I'm voting for him. I read an article he wrote about the Winter Olympics in one of the BYU magazines(my alma mater); and I have been a follower of his career since then. I'm not sure there was much of a picture in the article; the article was fascinating about how he put his team together and some of the problems he encountered.

My God..this was 17 years ago...

Okay...that was about the time that Gingrich started championing national mandates for health care it was a whole two years before he got in big trouble for being a crook.

I mean come on...pathetic.

Okay, you make a fair point RW. I'll let it slide this time, but passing on another false statement without comment might earn you a red flag in the future.
