Michele Bachmann's Pledge fiasco

Michele Bachmann was already in hot water after signing a pledge that appears to maybe, sorta-kinda, call for a ban on porn. Now it turns out that same pledge included a controversial slavery-related clause in its preamble, forcing Bachmann to backpedal and the group behind the pledge to ultimately remove the reference. The section in question read, “Slavery had a disastrous impact on African-American families, yet sadly a child born into slavery in 1860 was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household than was an African-American baby born after the election of the USA’s first African-American President,” Politico reports.
The full story is HERE.

A couple of thoughts/points:

1.  Although the authors of the pledge removed the reference to slavery, that DOESN'T CHANGE the fact that Bachmann signed it while it was still there. Lets assume for the sake of argument, she didn't read it. That thought does not make me feel that much better. Most responsible folks read everything before they put their John Hancock on it.

2.  The General election will be a very tough race this time around. Whoever the nominee is, this person will need to attract independents and disenfranchised Democrats. If Bachmann were to be the nominee, this pledge that she signed will not sit very well, nor should it. If I were an African American disenfranchised with President Obama and the direction of the economy, I might think twice about pulling the lever.

This shows either poor judgment or twisted values on her part.

This is another example of her not being able to win the general election if she was the Rep nominee.

Exactly, Bosman.

The pledge also says being gay is a choice. That bothers me as much as the black references. And there's other bad things in there, as well.

This is no way to win an election. Signing this pledge is an instant disqualifyer, IMO. But remember, the folks in Iowa are all about finding their perfect 'one of us' candidate, so I guess it won't hurt her there.

"This shows either poor judgment or twisted values on her part."
So prefering that children be raised by two parents is poor judgement??? No wonder we are in bad shape.

"The pledge also says being gay is a choice." To at least some extent it is. Else nobody would move back and forth between being Gay and Straight.

maybe read the entire pledge before signing dimwits....dont forget mr samtorum signed this as well.

Ohio JOE said...

Apparently you did not read it either Anon.

OJ, seriously. Do you really think being gay is a choice? And should we ask our presidential candidates to sign a pledge saying so? LOL

That pledge is the most ridiculous piece of nonsense. Whatever value it might have had was tarnished beyond repair by all the iffy things in it. Like pledging to not cheat on your spouse if elected.

Bachmann and Santorum showed how ill-prepared they are for leadership by signing it.

What a hoot.

Bachmann somehow thinks she can win the Presidency by excluding and/or alienating various groups.

As a walking and talking disaster area, She does not have the mental capacity to be President.

"OJ, seriously. Do you really think being gay is a choice?" It may not be a 100% choice, but if you think that choice has absolutely nothing to do with it, than you have gone a lot more nutty than I realized:

Pawlenty Isn't Gaga about Singer's Science
Former Governor Tim Pawlenty may like the song "Born This Way," but that doesn't mean he agrees with the philosophy behind it. On yesterday's edition of "Meet the Press," David Gregory pressed the presidential candidate about the popular Lady Gaga tune. "Is being gay a choice?" Gregory asked. Pawlenty responded, "There's no scientific conclusion that it's genetic... We don't know that. We don't know to what extent it's behavioral. It's something that's been debated by scientists for a long time. If I understand the science, there is not current conclusion that it is genetic." Not only is Pawlenty brave, he's right. As FRC's Peter Sprigg explains in his "Top 10 Myths about Homosexuality," there is no such thing as a "gay gene." Instead, research points to a mix of developmental factors to explain the behavior. Even the Obama administration, when it refused to defend the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), cited a "growing scientific consensus that sexual orientation is... immutable." Yet the only source it could produce to support its claim was a 1992 study, which was debunked shortly afterward by a pro-homosexual researcher! Hats off to Governor Pawlenty for knowing his science and refusing to be swayed by one singer's delusions about sexuality.

"Bachmann somehow thinks she can win the Presidency by excluding and/or alienating various groups." That is rich coming from the Romney camp.

Bachmann is showing very poor judgment for someone who wants to be President and represent ALL Americans.

Ohio JOE said...

President also represents drunks Ann, but you do not hear any candidate wanting to legalize drunk driving.

"President also represents drunks Ann, but you do not hear any candidate wanting to legalize drunk driving."

If there's a Pledge there, Bachmann will find it?

Ohio JOE said...

Yes, it is good that at least the female candidates represent sober Americans.

Many thought Bachmann might have a shot at Romney's short list.

Not now! She's too toxic for the general.

It's really simple.... Bachman is Palin 2.0. Neither of them belong anywhere near the Oval Office.

Poor Michelle is coming under scrutiny now!

She can now join Romney and Palin in the We're gonna look under every rock there is to find something with your name on it.

She seems to be leading them both in the BIZARRE DEPARTMENT!

I've tried to look at Bachmann with an open mind.

She is making it very difficult.

Ohio JOE said...

"Neither of them belong anywhere near the Oval Office." Yes, that is correct that niether Mr. Romney nor Mr. Obama belong near the White House.

GetReal said...

You're absolutely correct, OJ. Romney shouldn't be near the White House, he should be in it, in the Oval Office serving as President. Luckily for us, there's a good chance he soon will be.

Ohio JOE said...

And fortunately, his chance is not quite as good as it was a few weeks ago.

OJ. I'm disappointed to see Rim Pawlenty go down the we don't know road. Anyone with half a brain knows being gay is not a choice. I don't care what scientists can't prove. It's obvious, and has been since the dawn of time.

My favorite part of the pledge is that sex in marriage is better than outside of marriage. If people are being faithful to their spouse, how would they know this to be a fact?

Or, if the comparison is with sex before marriage, what if someone genuinely disagrees with this particular point based on their own experience? Can they still sign the pledge?

For those of you who are concerned about gay rights, I suggest you go to Article 6 blog in one of the more recent posts and find the link to an article about the Church of England's pursuit to conform with the gov'ts new mandates to treat sexual orientation equally. It speaks of the church's efforts to find ways to bring gays into leadership in the church while still allowing for the feelings of those who are gay or have same sex attraction, but feel that it is morally wrong to practice openly, and go to church leaders to help them cope. Talk about challenging. The Church of England is now no longer "equal" but placed in a position of submission to the decrees of the government.

"Anyone with half a brain knows being gay is not a choice" Martha, the reverse opposite is true. You cannot be a serious human being and claim that there is absolutely no choice what so ever. There is no scientific evidence backing you up.
