As Republican presidential contenders prepare for their first major debate Monday, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney building a modest lead in a political climate that could be well-suited to his candidacy.....
....."Romney has had a good six months, solidifying himself as the front-runner" and blasting Obama on the economy as disappointing jobless numbers were released, says Scott Reed, a Republican consultant who ran Bob Dole's presidential campaign in 1996 . "He has shaped up to be the 800-pound gorilla in New Hampshire."

Economy/Jobs 57%
Government debt 14%
Government size & power 11%
Foreign affairs/National Security 8%
Social issues 8%

Mitt seems to be playing it right this time.
All the staying out of the limelight and picking and choosing the media you participate in, seems to be working.
Post announcement bump - not the best of bumps but he and his supporters should be very happy.

Jersey, I'd love to see Palin get in and hold all the others back. But alas, I don't think she's going to.

Martha, to be honest...when it comes to Palin...I'm never sure either. A good part of me says she is but then again you never know. If she does get in, I think it will become a two person race from then on. It then becomes which lower tier candidates can eat into the first tier more. Will Cain and Bachmann eat into Palin's support more than Pawlenty, Huntsman and (?)Giuliani(?) will eat into Romney's? That'll be the difference with the nomination. I think what you will find, with the above scenario...is a race of stalking horses...one helping Romney and one helping Palin.

Romney really got a bounce in all the polls.
You have to wonder what is going through the minds of the rest of the candidates. Other than Palin, the rest are no where to be found.
