Mitt Romney maybe eyeing a later start for 2012

According to Politico, Mitt Romney made a conference call to 245 of his top financial supporters today. Joining him on the call were,
Beth Myers, his 2008 campaign manager; Spencer Zwick, who was his finance director; Matt Rhoades, who runs his Free and Strong America PAC; and Eric Fehrnstrom, his longtime spokesman.
Also speaking on the call were Republican Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown and New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, as well as former Florida Republican Party Chairman Al Cardenas.
Politico is reporting Romney as saying,
“People are exhausted from the 2010 election, and they’re not anxious to begin right away with the next campaign,”
Romney also told supporters that his organization will be “smaller in scale than our last effort.”

Romney's rationale is that he was an unknown in 2008. This time, "January and February will come and go without an announcement".

He told his supporters that he can plan a leaner staff because he’s now a leading national Republican figure and needs a team that can hang on through a prolonged primary campaign amid a crowded GOP field.

There was some rumblings out of MA last week that Mitt would only run if a victory was a certainty. I think it was the Boston Herald.

Spearking of the Boston Herald...

Mitt's Bad Medicine

Add another name to the list of Massachusetts conservatives who have signed the ABM Treaty: Anyone But Mitt.

Until Mitt Romney admits that his mandate-driven, big-government Romneycare was a mistake, I will be supporting any viable GOP candidate running against him in 2012. And I’ll be urging my fellow New England Republicans - including my many friends in New Hampshire - to do the same.

[...]

The highest health insurance costs, the highest medical costs and the fastest rising costs. Massachusetts has them all, thanks to Romney. And they’re getting worse.

[...]

ll of which is why, until Romney admits that Romneycare was a mistake - not just mismanaged by Deval Patrick - I’ll be voting for anyone else.

Even (gasp) Sarah Palin.

Speaking of the Boston Herald... They rarely run anything positive on GMR.

Anon, Why not? Isn't the Boston Herald the more conservative of the two papers?

I'd say it looks like he's definitely in.

Romney in 2012!

If March comes around, and his poll numbers drop considerably as a result of continuing scrutiny of RomneyCare, do you think he'll still run?

I don't...

I'm sure glad he's moving toward a run in 2012.

how late can he wait if he is not in this by july 4th 2011 should we worry?

More than likely, he will announce in late march or April, if Palin and or Huckabee announce by then. If not, he can wait until after either of them announce. No later than early summer.

RWN - Rather than salivating at the prospect of snagging the GOP nomination (whch you obviously need Romney out in order to do) you need to figure out how Palin gets the 270 Electoral Votes needed to beat Obama.

No Doug, it's the other way around. Mitt needs Sarah out, which is why you, the rest of the Rombots, and the "anonymous sources" spend so much time trying to tear her down.

Did you listen to Rush today? Mark Stein was the fill-in host. He took down Mitt in a big way. RomneyCare will kill his candidacy--perhaps before it even gets off the ground. I bet he doesn't even run.

Again - yuo are focused on the Nomination. She may indeed win that - with Fox News, Rush, Levin, et al, all shilling and pushing her.

Then what?

If Sarah is so good, so strong and so perfect, why do she constantly need third parties to keep selling her? Why do you need other people out of the race for her to win?

I bet she doesn't run, because people are going to be sick of her. People are getting fatigued about having her rammed down their throats. Now Fox is promoting a weekend special on Geraldo, about the "Palin Factor" The ad asks, "How will bla blah blah effect her 2012 chances?" Give us all a break already?

I commend Romney for laying low and eschewing the limelight for awhile. Palin could take a page from that book.

RWN - Don't get so riled up. I spend as much time "tearing down" Palin as you do shredding Romney. So why the double standard?

That's thing that galls me and evidently Karl Rove as well, the onion thin skin of the Palinistas.
