Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of January 22:
By the evening of January 22, the situation on the front remains tense: active combat operations continue in most directions, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Telegram.
As of 10:00 p.m. Kyiv time on January 22, a significant number of combat engagements have been recorded along the entire front line. The enemy is actively using aviation, drones, and artillery; however, Ukrainian defenders continue to repel offensive attempts and maintain control over key areas.
Overall situation on the front
Since the beginning of the day, 196 combat engagements have taken place. Russian forces carried out one missile strike and 70 air strikes, used one missile, and dropped 171 guided aerial bombs. In addition, the use of 2,862 kamikaze drones and 2,717 shelling attacks on the positions of Ukrainian forces and populated areas has been recorded.
In Northern-Slobozhanskyi and Kursk directions, the enemy carried out three attacks, conducted three air strikes using five guided bombs, and launched 58 attacks, including a strike with a multiple launch rocket system.
In the Southern-Slobozhanskyi direction, the enemy attacked the positions of Ukrainian units eight times in the areas of Prylipky, Vovchansk, and Vovchanski Khutory; one combat engagement is ongoing. In the area of Synkivka on the Kupiansk direction, the enemy attack was repelled.
Defense Forces repelled seven assaults in the Lyman direction. Two attacks were recorded in the Sloviansk direction, and seven assault actions took place in the Kramatorsk direction near Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Chasiv Yar, and toward Markove.
Twenty combat engagements took place in the Kostiantynivka direction. In the Pokrovsk direction, 62 attacks were recorded over the past day. According to preliminary data, 192 Russian soldiers were eliminated, including 150 irrecoverable losses, as well as enemy equipment, drones, and fortifications.
Twelve attacks were repelled in the Oleksandrivka direction, with two engagements still ongoing. In the Huliaipole direction, the enemy attempted to advance 34 times. In the Orikhiv direction, an attack in the area of Plavni was repelled. War update: 196 clashes on frontline, Ukrainian forces eliminate 150 invaders in Pokrovsk sector:
On January 22, 2026, there were 196 combat engagements between the Ukrainian Defense Forces and Russian invaders, with nearly a third occurring in the Pokrovsk sector.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported this on Facebook, providing operational data as of 22:00, according to Ukrinform.
"Since the start of the day, 196 combat clashes have taken place… Russian forces carried out one missile and 70 air strikes, used one rocket, and dropped 171 guided bombs. In addition, they deployed 2,862 kamikaze drones and conducted 2,717 shelling attacks on our troops’ positions and populated areas," the statement reads.
In the Northern Slobozhanshchyna and Kursk sectors, three Russian attacks occurred. The enemy conducted three airstrikes, dropped five guided bombs, and carried out 58 artillery strikes, one of which involved a multiple rocket launcher.
In the Southern Slobozhanshchyna sector, the enemy attacked Ukrainian positions eight times near Prylipka, Vovchansk, Vovchanski Khutory, and toward Izbytske. One engagement remains ongoing.
In the Kupiansk sector, Ukrainian forces repelled an enemy attack near Synkivka.
In the Lyman sector, seven assault attempts by the enemy were repelled near Myrne, Drobysheve, Kolodiazi, Zarichne, and Yampolivka.
In the Slovyansk sector, two attacks occurred near Sviato-Pokrovske.
In the Kramatorsk sector, seven enemy assaults were reported near Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Chasiv Yar, and toward Markove.
In the Kostiantynivka sector, 20 combat engagements took place. The enemy attacked Ukrainian positions near Predtechyne, Pleshchiivka, Ivanopillia, Yablunivka, Rusyn Yar, and Sofiivka.
In the Pokrovsk sector, the enemy attacked 62 times near Shakhove, Ivanivka, Dorozhne, Rodynske, Sukhetske, Pokrovsk, Kotlyne, Udachne, Molodetske, Horykhove, Dachne, and toward Novopavlivka. Some clashes are ongoing. --->READ MORE HERE
