Ukraine’s Forces Hold Front-Line City of Bakhmut, Zelensky Says
Kyiv’s military said Russia had attempted new offensives on Bakhmut and two other targets
Russian forces launched an intense new assault near the front-line city of Bakhmut on Monday, while Ukrainian soldiers resisted a six-month assault on the area, cementing it as a key symbolic prize in the war.
“Bakhmut is holding out against all odds. And although most of the city is destroyed by Russian strikes, our warriors repel constant attempts at Russian offensive there,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his nightly televised address to the nation on Sunday.
Ukraine’s deputy defense minister, Hanna Malyar, said Monday that fierce fighting for the nearby city of Soledar was continuing into Monday evening.
“After an unsuccessful attempt to capture Soledar and retreat, the enemy regrouped, recovered losses, transferred additional assault units, changed tactics and launched a powerful assault,” she wrote on her Telegram channel.
Bakhmut has been the scene of brutal fighting since Russian soldiers arrived on the city’s outskirts in early July, hoping to seize control and open a path to the political and economic centers of Slovyansk and Kramatorsk in the Ukrainian-held portions of the Donbas area, once one of the country’s main industrial regions.
Daily Russian bombardment has turned the once-elegant city center into a succession of obliterated facades, with debris strewn on the streets amid freshly dug-out trenches and antitank barriers. Russian forces have refocused their firepower on the city in recent months after Ukrainian troops recaptured swaths of the country that had been occupied by Russia following its February 2022 invasion. --->READ MORE HERE

Strike on Makiyivka part of Ukraine’s counter-offensive, says defense intelligence:
The strike on the mobilized Russian soldiers in Makiyivka, Donetsk Oblast, is a part of the Ukrainian counteroffensive, Vadym Skibitsky, representative of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, said in an interview with Italian newspaper Corrieredella Sera published on Jan. 8.
Skibitsky said this attack was carried out to prevent another Russian offensive.
"It was a big loss for them,” he said.
“It is hard to say what consequences it will have, but we will see. Probably, this is a message to all Russian soldiers who are forced to fight — it is a signal to them. This is what happens to those whom Putin sends to the front. And (a signal) for the generals who make such stupid decisions, concentrating so many people in one place.”
The intel representative added that recently Russians have taken many mobilized conscripts not only to the east of Ukraine, but also to Zaporizhzhya and Kherson oblasts.
Ukraine attacked a vocational school housing Russian military personnel on New Year's Eve,
Russian terrorist Igor Girkin announced the destruction of hundreds of Russian military personnel as a result of the rocket attack. The huge losses are allegedly due to the fact that the Russian military command placed in the same building a stock of ammunition, which detonated following the HIMARS rocket strike.
The Russian Defense Ministry acknowledged the deaths of 89 of its soldiers and said that the reason was the alleged mass use of cellphones. --->READ MORE HERE
