WSJ: Ukraine Fends Off Fresh Wave of Drone Attacks on Kyiv:
Ukrainian air defenses repelled a wave of Russian strikes in Kyiv on Wednesday, knocking at least 13 drones out of the sky, with explosions reported in the historical center of the city.
Russia has increasingly reverted to the use of its Iranian-made drones after receiving what was likely a new shipment of them earlier this month. Even after Ukraine shot down the first shipment, Iranian officials were carrying out training on their Mohajer and Shahed 136-series drones in Crimea, Ukrainian officials said.
Debris from the destroyed drones caused damage to government buildings in the Kyiv region and apartments in the center of the capital. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainian air defenses had shot down all of the unmanned aerial vehicles. No injuries were reported.
The drones help Russia to maintain its pressure on Ukrainian infrastructure by providing a cheaper alternative to Moscow’s cruise missiles, stockpiles of which have been depleted by months of attacks.
The attack came hours after U.S. officials said the Biden administration was completing plans to give Ukraine an unspecified number of Patriot missile-defense systems to help protect against Russia’s strategy of using missile strikes to grind down Ukraine’s power-grid capabilities during freezing winter temperatures, while damaging other critical infrastructure.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin could sign the directive providing the Patriot as early as this week, the officials said. --->READ MORE HERE
NY POST: Ukraine shoots down all 13 of Russia’s Iranian-made drones in Kyiv:
Moscow swarmed Kyiv with suicide drones Wednesday after weeks of smaller-scale strikes, but the Ukrainian Air Force reported all 13 of the Iranian-made drones were shot down.
The explosive-laden craft fell on the capital city’s central Shevchenkivskyi district, with at least two governmental buildings sustaining damage, but no casualties were reported, Kyiv’s mayor Vitali Klitschko said.
Ukrenergo, the company that manages Ukraine’s embattled power grid, reported no new outages as a result of the bombardment.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky lauded his country’s air defenses, saying all of the 13 Iranian-made suicide drones launched at Kyiv were shot down.
“Well done guys, I’m proud,” Zelensky said.
The triangular-shaped drones are common enough in the skies over Ukraine to have earned the nickname “mopeds” for the buzzing sound of their engines. --->READ MORE HERE
