A CAVE? President Trump Tells Agencies to Provide Records on Citizenship

MY TAKE FIRST: If this CITIZENSHIP DATA COLLECTION METHOD that's to take the place of a census question can't LEGALLY be used to determine if places like Mexifornia have pumped-up population numbers and are OVER REPRESENTED IN CONGRESS, Then it's A CAVE by Trump, pure and simple and a BIG DISAPPOINTMENT for not taking a Jacksonian Stand:

President Trump is dropping efforts to get a citizenship question on the 2020 U.S. census, he said Thursday, marking a retreat from his public declarations in recent days that he wouldn’t give up the fight in the wake of a Supreme Court ruling that effectively blocked the move.

Mr. Trump said he would instead sign an executive order directing all federal agencies to provide the Commerce Department with “all requested records” on the number of citizens and noncitizens in the country.

“We will leave no stone unturned,” Mr. Trump said, speaking in the Rose Garden, with thunder rumbling in the background.

The administration spent two weeks whipsawing between fighting to include the question on census forms and retreating in the wake of the court’s ruling. Government lawyers had told two courts that the question would be dropped, only to find themselves working through the July 4 holiday to solve the legal conundrum and lawfully add the question.

The citizenship question hasn’t been asked on the main census form since 1950. The federal government already collects citizenship information through means other than the 10-year census, including passport and Social Security applications, and a survey that goes out to a small sample of the population every year.

The Commerce Department began printing census forms last week, and the Justice Department had repeatedly told federal courts that June 30 was the deadline by which the census needed to be finalized.
