LIKE HELL THEY WILL: Trump administration says existing stretches of fence will count as 'Trump's border wall'

When is a fence a wall, or vice versa?

While that question might inherently prompt semantic debate, the answer got even fuzzier Wednesday, when Homeland Security Director Kirstjen Nielsen seemingly contradicted statements made by Donald Trump on the presidential campaign trail and during his first months in office.

At a White House briefing Wednesday, Nielsen declared that new fences along the nation's southwest border are walls, and are fulfilling the president's promises, even if those fences are being built to replace existing fences.

"To us, it's all new wall," said Nielsen, who was confirmed as DHS secretary in December. "If there was a wall before that needs to be replaced, it's being replaced by a new wall. This is Trump's border wall."

On the campaign trail and in statements after taking office, President Trump ridiculed existing structures and vowed to build something different — a solid, daunting barrier up to 30 feet tall.
