It Is Not The Government's Job To Create Jobs

On Monday, a new poll demonstrated that Donald Trump’s sticks-and-carrots approach to Carrier forcing the company to keep 1,000 jobs in Indiana is wildly popular. Fully 60 percent of voters said that Trump’s Carrier cramdown made them more favorable to Trump, including 89 percent of Trump voters and 32 percent of Clinton voters; just 9 percent of Americans said they were less favorable toward Trump.
Here’s the obligatory Kellyanne Conway celebratory tweet:

This isn’t a shock. Most Americans are in favor of bad policies that have demonstrable beneficiaries and diffuse victims. According to that same Politico poll:
Taking this at face value, most Republicans are now Democrats. They think crony capitalism is fine (offering government contracts to keep jobs in the United States? Negotiate with individual private companies on a case-by-case basis?). They’re okay with the president cramming down deals on private companies.
For that same reason, a trillion-dollar stimulus package proposed by Trump would likely go over like gangbusters. After all, it did for Obama too, originally: according to Gallup in February 2009, 59 percent of Americans favored Obama’s proposed $800 billion stimulus program.
