Why Does It Take A Donald Trump To Rouse Republicans On Sanctuary Cities?

Immigration: Republicans are finally speaking out against the liberal sanctuary cities that let criminal illegals evade deportation and harm Americans. Tragically for Kate Steinle, it's a bit late in coming.
It didn't take long for Democrats to run for political cover after the July 1 shooting of Steinle, allegedly by a five-time deported illegal alien with seven felonies on his record, as she strolled with her father on a tourist pier in San Francisco.

The city's left-wing mayor, Ed Lee, backtracked on its sanctuary policy, saying he was looking for ways to cooperate with federal authorities. California Sens. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein vowed to investigate the outrage.
Presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton said apparent shooter, Francisco Sanchez, should have been deported (even as an aide added the ridiculous claim Thursday that sanctuary cities make the public safer).
The city of San Diego denied that it was ever one of America's 200 sanctuary cities. California Gov. Jerry Brown and Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, both of whom helped enact laws to thwart deportations of illegal criminals, have stayed out of sight.
Most of the attention, however, has focused on GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump, who immediately brought up the disproportionate criminality among illegal immigrants and was attacked with the race card, the nativist card, a beauty queen he employs and corporate boycotters tut-tutting their political correctness.
A funny thing happened, however, after Trump's inelegant but verifiably true comments about illegals: He shot up in the polls and is now running first in North Carolina and first or second in other key states.
