A new report from the Government Accountability Office shows that federal agencies have little, if any, idea how much of the roughly $1.2 billion they spend each year on mobile phones is wasted, or even what that money is buying.
The federal government has been struggling to control its cell phone spending for years. Audits repeatedly found that federal agencies were paying for unused or little-used phones, and overuse of data plans. The IRS, for example, spent $48,000 for unused phones in 2011 and $1.1 million for employee overuse of data plans.
In other cases, the audits found that agencies spent vastly different sums for the same type of services. At one, the prices paid for an unlimited voice, data and texting plan ranged from $69 to $122 a month.
So in 2011, an executive order went out requiring federal agencies to take an inventory of their mobile devices and service plans, and implement procedures to minimize waste.Read the rest of this op-ed HERE.
