An Iran Nuke Deal? ... Not Even Close

Iran: John Kerry now says we're "closer than ever" to a nuclear deal with the mullahs. Wasn't there already a deal? Iran's foreign minister had it right earlier this month: "Nothing is agreed on until everything is agreed on."

Speaking at the United Nations on Monday, Secretary of State Kerry insisted that "We are, in fact, closer than ever to the good, comprehensive deal that we have been seeking, and if we can get there, the entire world will be safer" because it "will close off all of Iran's possible pathways to the nuclear material required for a nuclear weapon and give the international community the confidence that it needs to know that Iran's nuclear program is indeed exclusively peaceful."

Whew. Every word of that is nonsense.

Even President Obama — who, even all the way back to his 2008 campaign, has been obsessed with negotiating a nuclear pact with the world's top terrorist state — began these talks from a position that Iran could not be trusted with its own program to produce "peaceful" nuclear fuel. All Tehran had to do was stick to its guns and that U.S. stance collapsed.

Closer than ever to a deal? Less than a month ago, Kerry, echoed by a media that wants a "deal of the century" to cover, was saying there already was a deal.

Close off all the pathways to a bomb? Inspectors have never been welcome in Iran and regime officials have made it clear this will continue to be the case.

And sanctions? It is now being reported as a monumental concession from Tehran that it is willing to wait a "few weeks" after a final deal is signed before the West's punitive economic sanctions are lifted.

Believe that and I've Got a Bridge to Sell You

As Iranian foreign minister Mohammed Javad Zarif has emphasized, the "set of conditions" the Obama administration supposedly requires Iran to meet before lifting sanctions would take Iran "only a few weeks" to meet.

And once the sanctions are gone, they will be next to impossible to reimpose. We will have to appeal to a new international bureaucracy, the nature of which is yet to be revealed, to reimpose them.
