The U.S. No Longer Hates To Lose

Islamic State: Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey shrugs his shoulders about the IS conquering the major Iraq city of Ramadi. Will the surrenders of Iraq and Afghanistan be followed by more lost wars?

'The blows and misfortunes of the war only give us additional strength." That was master Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels talking in early 1943, when things were not going the Germans' way.

Place those words in the mouth of Gen. George Patton. Or Winston Churchill. They don't work, do they? As Patton told the Third Army prior to the invasion of France, "the very thought of losing is hateful to Americans." Churchill told the House of Commons in 1940 that "we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end."

Now we have a new historic military quote:

"The issue isn't brick and mortar."

Today, the top U.S. general says don't worry about losing to the enemy here and there. Dempsey on Thursday said of Ramadi, which was won by U.S. troops in a major battle in the Iraq surge eight years ago, and was key to regaining control of Anbar province:

"The city itself is not symbolic in any way. It's not been declared, you know, part of the caliphate on one hand or central to the future of Iraq."

Central to the future of Iraq? Iraq practically no longer exists. Its national territory has been fragmented by the emergence of an entity so evil, it videotapes the beheadings of innocent Christians and Westerners, and the incineration of a Jordanian pilot.
