Mideast Disasters Multiply Thanks To U.S. Power Vacuum

"This strategy of taking out terrorists who threaten us, while
supporting partners on the front lines, is one that we have
successfully pursued in Yemen and Somalia for years."
Yemen: Iran and Saudi Arabia are spoiling for war in the country the Obama administration not long ago touted as an illustration of its successful policies. The Mideast minus U.S. power equals mass bloodshed.
In the summer of 2007, first-term Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois greatly enhanced his media-perceived gravitas with what was hailed as a weighty article in Foreign Affairs magazine.

Its title was "Renewing American Leadership." But it is its subtitle that is painfully ironic today: "Common Security for our Common Humanity."
The notion of "national security" was to be rendered obsolete by an enlightened vision of the U.S. finally working as equals with the rest of the world.
"If we act with boldness and foresight, we will be able to tell our grandchildren that this was the time when we helped forge peace in the Middle East," Obama wrote.
How's that going for you, Mr. President? Six years of "Common Security" substituting for assertive American power isn't forging peace; it is detonating war.
Something unthinkable, the Islamic State — a government that sends out slickly produced videotapes of beheadings and incinerations — emerged in a country that was on the right track pre-Obama (Iraq), and another whose evil was mostly contained and stable (Syria).
It is only a matter of time before IS violence comes to the West, as it has threatened. But IS is only one of the new U.S. foreign policy's many Mideast disasters.
