Islamification of Europe? Record Tide of Refugees Expected to Strain the System

The EU has made little progress on its system from dealing with refugees, who come from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and other conflict zones
Europe’s asylum system is set for a major test this year, as a record number of refugees are expected to attempt the dangerous trip to safety from Europe’s war-torn neighbors.

Yet the bloc has made little progress in fixing long-simmering problems that critics say have made a mess of Europe’s system for dealing with refugees.
Thousands of “boat people” die in the Mediterranean every year trying to reach Europe’s shores. Others freeze or are beaten to death when crossing land borders, particularly from Turkey into Greece and Bulgaria.

They come from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and other conflict zones. Despite the risks, they pay thousands of euros to smugglers, who often abuse them or leave them hanging when confronted by police.
Though their chances of actually making it into a European country are slim, numbers are growing each year. In 2014, 626,065 refugees filed asylum claims in the 28 countries of the European Union, a 44% increase compared with the previous year. Most of them were Syrians. And of those, almost half applied in Germany and Sweden alone.
