Gowdy Steps Up Pressure on Clinton

During hours of testimony over three public hearings, House Select Committee on Benghazi Chairman Trey Gowdy has yet to utter one important word: “Clinton.”
Mr. Gowdy, a Republican appointed almost a year ago to chair the special panel, has no doubt been mindful of Democrats’ contention that the committee was set up to target Hillary Clinton, the presumed Democratic presidential front-runner who was secretary of state when U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed in Benghazi, Libya, in 2012.
Until now, the 50-year-old South Carolina congressman, a former federal prosecutor, has clashed with panel Democrats and harangued State Department officials for shortcomings in embassy security and being slow to comply with document requests. But he has been careful to avoid focusing on Mrs. Clinton.
That is about to change. The panel last week issued a subpoena for all of Mrs. Clinton’s communications related to Libya, and Mr. Gowdy said in an interview Wednesday that the investigation will expand, given the revelation that she exclusively used a private email address while secretary.
The committee’s growing attention on Mrs. Clinton is already giving Mr. Gowdy—known for his intense questioning of witnesses in a deep Southern drawl—a prime opportunity to bolster his career. “That’s the reason that leadership picked Trey to do it,” said Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R., S.C.). “Trey’s a lousy politician. He’s really good at what he’s doing, which is finding out what the facts are.”
The fact-finding is expected to include subpoenaing or seeking testimony from Mrs. Clinton’s closest advisers, Mr. Gowdy said. He said the former secretary could be asked to make multiple appearances before the panel. “I need somebody to swear under oath that every record we are entitled to have, we have,” he said.
