The GOP Didn't Need Immigration Reform To Win Big

2014: Republican candidates didn't listen to the advice of their own party honchos, who told them that they couldn't win without pandering to the Latino vote. They won in a historic landslide anyway.
After 2012's loss, the Republican establishment published a 100-page mea culpa urging future candidates to follow Democrats' and the Washington media's advice, and "champion" what amounts to amnesty for illegal Hispanic immigrants.

In the report, the Republican National Committee warned: "Among the steps Republicans take in the Hispanic community and beyond, we must embrace and champion comprehensive immigration reform. If we do not, our party's appeal will continue to shrink to its core constituencies only."
Added the "lessons learned" report: "Hispanic voters tell us our party's position on immigration has become a litmus test ... It is encouraging that there are many Republican leaders both in the House and the Senate working on immigration proposals."
Good thing that Republicans by and large discarded the report.

In the New Hampshire Senate race, for example, GOP candidate Scott Brown almost upset Democrat incumbent Jeanne Shaheen by bashing amnesty and pushing border security.
And Hispanics have hardly written off Republicans. In a number of key states, they actually voted more heavily Republican:
• In Colorado, an increasingly Latino state, Republican Sen.-elect Cory Gardner avoided the immigration issue altogether. He instead campaigned in Hispanic neighborhoods with a pro-jobs and small-government message.
• In Georgia's Senate race, GOP victor David Perdue received 42% of the Latino vote, despite signing an anti-amnesty pledge.
• In Texas, Republican Gov.-elect Greg Abbott garnered a surprisingly large share of the Hispanic vote (44%) by talking up jobs creation and economic growth while running on border security....
