GM to Unveil a Self-Driving (sort of) Car in 2 Years

Within the next two years, General Motors will introduce a car that can drive itself on the highway and in stop-and-go traffic without the driver’s hands on the wheel or foot on the brake pedal. It will also introduce technology that allows cars to communicate with other cars.

In a speech on Sunday at the Intelligent Transport System World Congress in Detroit, GM chief executive Mary Barra said both features would be rolled out for different models of the 2017 Cadillac.

“With Super Cruise, when there’s a congestion alert on roads like California’s Santa Monica Freeway, you can let the car take over and drive hands-free and feet-free through the worst stop-and-go traffic around,” Barra said. “And if the mood strikes you on the high-speed road from Barstow, California, to Las Vegas, you can take a break from the wheel and pedals and let the car do the work.”

GM’s “Super Cruise” technology can control steering, acceleration and braking at 70 miles per hour, Bloomberg News reported, or when traffic is barely inching along. What Barra described as “advanced, highly automated driving technology” would go beyond similar technology available on some Mercedes-Benz cars that works only at low speeds. Both Hyundai and Honda offer cars with automatic braking and cruise control that adapts to the speed of traffic, but GM claims their new “hands-off” system is a “new type of driving experience.”
