Rubio spoke on the Senate floor in an attempt to convince the Senate to approve a House-passed bill giving greater authority to the Veterans Affairs Secretary to fire senior staffers. Veterans' Affairs Committee Chair Bernie Sanders (I-VT) objected to the request, saying that more time was needed to realize the full implications of the House measure:
