What's in Paul Ryan's Budget Deal?

1. The total deal is $85 billion. About $45 billion of that replaces sequestration cuts in 2014. About $20 billion replaces sequestration cuts in 2015. About $20 billion is deficit reduction atop sequestration.
2. The sequestration relief is evenly divided between defense spending and non-defense discretionary spending. The sequester's cuts to mandatory spending are unaffected.
3. The new policies in the deal are split between revenue through fees -- travelers will see higher prices on airline tickets and federal workers will have to contribute more to pensions -- and spending cuts.
4. Spending will be $45 billion higher in 2014 than it would've been absent the deal.
5. The deal replaces about half of sequestration's cuts to defense and non-defense discretionary spending in 2014. It replaces about a fourth of them in 2015. That means most of sequestration will go into effect in both years.

Thank Bosman. I don't know much about the deal, but I do know that the merits of it are secondary to political considerations for people like McConnell (has to vote no due to tea party challenger),
Cruz (has to vote no to please his tea party fan base), and Rubio (has to vote no due to regain cred after immigration missteps) etc.

I don't think Ryan is a RINO, or a sell-out. I think he's honestly trying to move toward conservative solutions, within the reality of divided government. The thing that bothers me about the carping is that some people believe you can magically get what you want by simply fighting! or wishing hard enough.

More GOP infighting is exactly what Obama needs, taking Obamacare off the front page. That is a huge mistake for Republicans.

Yeah, very 'conservative solutions.'

We could have done a lot better. More and more Americans are sick and tired of the GOP compromising to the point the lose and the country and free markets suffer.

OJ, the point is that we could not do a lot better. There's nothing we really can do until we get another branch or two, which actually is possible if we play our cards right. This deal is extremely small potatoes and not worth a fight. If we allow the hint of another shutdown, we are being really really stupid. That's why this bill is going to pass, and it's not going to matter a hill of beans. Obamacare needs to stay front and center.

I am pretty sure the Repubs are trying not to give the press something else to talk abou instead of Obamacare. I think certain house and senate members won't be expected to vote for it, but I think it probably will pass. We really, really need to get at least the senate and house before we are able to make more demands. Unfortunately, we lost the Senate... Akin, Angell, and Murdoch weren't helpful, but we Repubs were totally stupid to let George Stephanopolis moderate a debate, where he firmly planted the idea that R's are opposed to birth control. The idea is stupid, but the LIV women voters ate it up. Makes me wonder if the Hollywood celebs the White House is hauling out to sell Obamacare to the young LIV's will actually make a difference. They understand the pop culture way better than I do.

Martha, it's a waste of time teaching some here anything. Math was just not something many on the far right know about.
