Egypt's ousted President Morsi is charged with Treason and could face the Death Penalty

Egyptian authorities charged ousted President Mohammed Morsi with treason, espionage, and sponsoring terrorism, alleging he collaborated with Iran and allied militant groups to destabilize the country.
The charges brought Wednesday carry the death penalty and are the most serious yet against the former leader, who is already in prison and on trial for separate charges of inciting murders of his opponents when he was in power.
In the new case, the top state prosecutor also charged 35 other members of Mr. Morsi's Islamist organization, the Muslim Brotherhood, on similar accusations.
Lawyers for the Brotherhood have previously criticized the charges against Mr. Morsi and his deputies as dubious and politically motivated, saying they were harsher than any case against Hosni Mubarak, who ruled Egypt for nearly 30 years with an autocratic grip. The lawyers could not immediately be reached for comment on Wednesday.
The prosecutor accused Mr. Morsi and Brotherhood leaders, while in power, of sharing state secrets with Iran's Revolutionary Guard in exchange for their support in terrorist attacks, state media reported.
Mr. Morsi and the Brotherhood are accused of conspiring with Iran and its Lebanese and Palestinian allies, Hezbollah and Hamas, to carry out terrorist attacks on security forces in Egypt's restive Sinai Peninsula in retribution for Mr. Morsi's ouster in a popularly backed military coup in July.
