The G.O.P./Tea Party´s Greatest Achievement. Seriously.

Sequester Layoffs.

Aparently, Lockheed Martin and other defense contractors will be laying off more employees because of sequestration. I say, here, here. The Defense contracting community ought to be cut in half. I say this as a former Defense contractor who profited from it. The Defense contracting community is made up of a lot of people who do little work and get paid a lot more than they should. And the folks that are at the top of the scheme get paid an absurd amount of money. I am not saying that contractors are never needed. Just don´t believe any congressman when they go on TV and say that if we slightly (and the sequestration cuts for the Defense Department were not that great) cut DoD then we won´t be able to defend our country. That is a lie.

I believe in an active foreign policy and a robust national defense. At the same time, I don´t believe that we ought to have a $550 billion Department of Defense. And, with all apologies to Mitt Romney, I don´t believe that we ought to keep DoD spending on pace with GDP growth. It is not necessary and it leads to corruption, which is basically what we have today.

In the Chris Christie-Rand Paul feud over national security, I side with Christie. However, I hope Christie is smart about his position. Let´s remain the superpower of the world, but let´s not give our hard-earned money to a bunch of contractors who deal so little work.

Lastly, those with basic math skills understand that increasing the DoD budget, cutting taxes, and not touching entitlement spending will result in more deficits. We want to deal with deficit? It will only be when both Democrats and Republicans becoming willing to compromise on all of the above.
