The Boston Marathon Bombings should force us all to be more observant of our surroundings

Unattended package at Boston Marathon
The photo on the right shows an unattended bag that some believe may have been the source of the first explosion at the Boston Marathon.

In other countries like England and Israel, locals have gotten in the habit of not letting something like that go unnoticed. This unfortunately may prove to be a wake-up call for all of us:
Acts of terror like Monday's bombings at the Boston Marathon have happened so often in Israel that they have shaped the behavior of ordinary citizens and their leaders in ways that could happen in the United States, an expert on Israeli security said Tuesday.

the package was sitting.
In Israel, avoiding suspicious packages that could be bombs is taught in grade school, surveillance techniques are aggressive, and watching for the typical profile of a bomber is routine, says Yoram Peri, director of the Institute of Israel Studies at the University of Maryland.
"You grow up internalizing this thought that there might be terrorists and attacks anywhere and everywhere," Peri said of growing up in Israel. "You walk differently, you look to the sides, you look for people who might be terrorists, you look for packages. You're more aware, that's clear."

This makes me sad. I grew up in a family of runners, ran cross country in high school, and have done countless community races, including one marathon. Bags sitting around at running events is not strange. Runners don't tend to carry their stuff around with them at events. They put it in a sports bag and leave them clustered under trees, sometimes supervised, sometimes not. I honestly don't think even spectator vigilance would have prevented this. Who would target a marathon? There's no precedent. Nobody saw this coming.

Bos,

Just waking up and getting caught up on the overnight happenings. Wow. Are you close to any of this?

That bag is not next to anyone and it's on the other side of the barrier towards the street.

That is unusual and should have got some notice.

Today, I feel like I wish every person/home in Boston had a loaded gun at home, at the ready.

My prayers are that law enforcement are blessed with safety and success today--he is caught without more loss of life or injuries.

And of course, my prayers are for all of the people who have lost someone, who are injured, and that includes the people in Texas as well. What a terrible, horrible week.

Hi Martha,

I have a license to carry and usually don't. I've been carrying since this all happened.

Hi RWN,

I used to live in the center of all this. Now I'm just outside Boston when I'm in the area.

Bosman, I would be as well. I hope you are all well in Boston, and that this is over soon.
