Oregon moves closer to requiring the Pledge of Allegiance be recited daily in schools

Reciting the Pledge of Allegiance is closer to becoming a daily practice in Oregon classrooms.
The House Committee on Education unanimously voted Friday to advance a bill to the House floor that would require classrooms to display a U.S. flag and provide students time to recite the Pledge of Allegiance at least once daily.
Current law says public school districts must provide students with the opportunity to salute the U.S. flag at least once each week of the school year. Students who do not participate in the pledge must remain silent during the salute.
House Bill 3014 would also apply to public charter schools.
Rep. Jeff Reardon, D-Portland, said as a veteran he’s strongly supporting the bill.
“I think that this is one time a day in schools that people can come together and remember what this nation is about,” Reardon told committee members.
