Gun Control Bill could reach the Senate Floor if Amendments are allowed

A Democratic gun-control measure moved closer to reaching the Senate floor Sunday when a high-profile Republican said he doesn't plan to join his party's efforts to block it. 
Despite deep misgivings about the underlying legislation, Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina told CNN Sunday that he would only join a Republican-led filibuster if Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) denied senators the right to offer amendments. Democrats need only a handful of Republican votes to overcome the filibuster, and Mr. Graham's decision suggests an effort to block the measure doesn't enjoy widespread GOP support. 
Even so, the legislation faces stiff resistance. Most Republicans and even some Democrats oppose the thrust of the bill—expanded background checks on all gun sales in the U.S. 
"This idea of private individuals transferring their weapons and having to go get through a background check makes no sense," Mr. Graham told CNN. He is pushing a measure with other senators that would make it harder for the mentally ill to obtain firearms.
