2nd Amendment Story: Kansas School District takes measures to protect their students

Friday morning, Jeff Illk strapped on a holster containing a Glock handgun and reported to his job as an Emporia High School security guard.
Carrying a weapon is nothing new to Illk, 58, a former city cop, sheriff's deputy and military police officer, but he says the Emporia School Board's unanimous vote Jan. 9 to arm security guards starting today will change his job.
Before the policy change, Illk says, he was "nothing more than a target … a target that can't fight back." Now, if an intruder with a weapon ever tries to do harm here, he says, he hopes he'll be able to tell parents, "I made your child safe today."

Illk was on duty the day of the Newtown shootings. As he monitored the horror online, he says, he thought about what he could have done if he had been there: "Hopefully stop him and save some lives."
