Stats on Gun Control measures prove one thing, THEY DON'T WORK!

Just this week, the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals struck down Illinois’s ban on carrying concealed weapons and gave the state six months to draft a law that legalizes concealed carry. Despite having the toughest gun control laws in the country Chicago remains one of the most violent and deadliest cities. A concealed carry law will make Illinois better and safer.
Gun control advocates just need to look at Virginia. Between 2006-2011 gun sales went up by 73% and at the same time gun-related violent crimes fell 24%. Virginia Commonwealth University professor Thomas R. Baker, who specializes in research methods and criminology, said this proves that more guns do not in fact cause more violence.
"While there is a wealth of academic literature attempting to demonstrate the relationship between guns and crime, a very simple and intuitive demonstration of the numbers seems to point away from the premise that more guns leads to more crime, at least in Virginia," said Baker.

Bosman, so true. The statistics all bear it out, if people would just stop and think for a minute.

In the Clackamas Town Center shooting, (my own mall, BTW) there is new evidence that a man with concealed carry may have stopped the shooter before he killed others. It is believed that when the shooter saw the man with the gun, that he then killed himself.

In Conn, it appears that the shooter killed himself as soon as he heard law enforcement.

The problem is not guns--we need more guns. I'm all for an armed guard at every school in America. This is how we prevent more deaths. This is how we keep children safe. Administrators also need to have weapons, and be trained to use them.

Keep dreaming, though.

I feel bad that this young man, who was clearly brain-injured, could not live a happy, if not a normal, life. I don't believe he was mentally ill, but that he had a specific brain-injury that is really almost impossible to treat. So sad.

I would like to comment further. I have learned a lot about brain injuries since my daughter was born. In the course of learning about how to help our daughter, we took a course on treatment for brain-injuried children.

One of the things that I learned is that the people on the edge of brain-injury--those that appear normal and are high-functioning-- are those that we must sympathize with the most. Because they appear normal, people set normal expectations for them, which are heart-breakingly impossible to achieve.

These people go through life being smart enough to realize that they don't and will never fit in, but are incapable of doing anything about it. Can you imagine the pain of that? The endless frustration?

I know several of these children, and my heart breaks for them all the time. People can be so cruel. I can easily spot them, and the pattern is always the same. They can't do well in school, they don't fit in, they get made fun of and are abused, and taken advantage of. Their parents often don't even realize that these kids can't meet normal expectations, which makes the situation even worse.

It appears to me that this particular young man fit this model to a T. Brilliant is some ways, but hopelessly unable to fit into society. His mother tried, but what options did she really have. I don't know what made him capable of doing what he did, but I do know that years of painful frustrations were part of it.

Next time you see a kid who doesn't fit in, show him your love, if nothing else.

Bosman and Martha, I agree that a measure to ban weapons is the wrong approach to fighting gun violence. I think it would increase criminal activity. Criminals with a non-violent arrest record may feel empowered to do so to reap bigger rewards from their victims. After all they know their victim will not be armed to protect themselves as before the ban they would take their chances. Misfits more than likely would be inclined to become criminal to feel superior or receive acceptance.
The recent shooting sprees by individuals clearly had underlying mental and/or emotional issues. The unusual behavioral patterns in the those individuals were noticed, ignored, or dismissed. Therefore, facilitating a tragic ending of many lives in the course of events. States require a person to have a driver license to operate a vehicle. It is acquired by passing a rules and safety exam in addition to a behind the wheel driving test. I think taking an exam geared to the category of the fire arm purchased would decrease many accidental deaths and instill a level of respect for the weapon.
"Guns do not kill people, people with guns kill people".
