Expert Opinion: Authorities helpless to prevent tragedies

Crimes like Friday’s tragedy in Newtown, Conn., are too difficult to prevent and very difficult to stop, an expert says. 
“Unfortunately – and I understand I’m the bearer of bad news – there’s very little that anyone can do to prevent something like this from happening,” said criminologist Mitch Librett of Bridgewater State University. 
Librett, a former police officer and tactical operations team leader in New Rochelle, N.Y., talked extensively about the Friday shooting, which left 27 dead, including elementary school students.

“In these types of circumstances, the only hope is to draw the shooter into a naked confrontation and hope that you’re better armed, better trained and better prepared,” Librett said, cautioning that the strategy is for “worst-case scenarios.” 
The time windows to intervene after a shooting situation begins, Librett said, are also very limited.
