Romney puts BS tag on the rumor that Marco Rubio is not being vetted

Marco Rubio is being “thoroughly vetted as part of our process” for picking a running mate, Romney told reporters in Holland, Michigan, where he was ending a five-day, six-state bus tour.
“There are only two people in this country who know who are being vetted and who are not, and that’s Beth Myers and myself,” the presumptive Republican presidential nominee said, referring to the longtime aide he named in late April to spearhead the selection of a vice presidential nominee.

I've seen a fair amount of speculation on this nothing-burger of a news item. The cynic in me says, Isn't Rubio on a book tour right now? What better way to stir up interest in him (and his book) than a timely point/counter-point about whether or not he's being vetted as VP by Romney.

I sure hope Rubio's being vetted. Because if he is, Mitt will not select him. Not in a million years. No chemistry between them. Plus, Mitt recoils from opportunists. Ain't gonna happen.

By the way, Mitt's response to the rumors was vintage mature CEO. I loved it.

Frankly, I was quite surprised that Romney decided to publicly comment on the Marco Rubio rumors.

It was completely out of character for him to do so, especially in this campaign cycle where he has been so diligent about staying on message regarding the economy, and not responding to every rumor and allegation circulated by the media.

First Romney proudly states that only he and Beth Myers know who's being vetted for VP, then tells the whole world that Marco Rubio is being thoroughly vetted for VP.

Huh?!?!?

What's next, a rumor about whether or not Rob Portman is being vetted for VP, prompting Romney to reveal to the world Portman's status in the vetting process?

Call me cynical, but I think Romney is simply vetting Rubio for show, to let Latino voters know that he thinks highly enough of Rubio to have him on his short list for VP.

But that's as far as this dog & pony show will go, since I can't imagine Romney actually believes Rubio is qualified to be VP - a heartbeat away from the presidency.
