Romney Requires Delegates To Sign A Loyalty Pledge For Handshake And Photo

It's no secret that a significant portion of the GOP base has reservations about Mitt Romney's commitment to the conservative principles he has espoused throughout the battle for the party's nomination. Considering that he likely has the nomination sewn up, you would think that a gathering of GOP delegates, RNC members, and state GOP chairmen would present the perfect opportunity for Mitt to win over some of the skeptics.

Attendees were given the opportunity to meet Romney in private on one condition. They had to sign a "loyalty pledge" first, promising to support him at the RNC convention. This is another prime example of the Romney campaign's "tin ear" that Erick Erickson wrote about.

CNN's Peter Hamby reports:
Members of the Republican National Committee gathering in Arizona were invited to meet with Mitt Romney in private Friday and have their pictures taken with the presumptive GOP nominee, but there was a price of admission: loyalty. RNC members and state GOP chairmen were welcomed into the private reception only after signing a form pledging to support Romney as a delegate to the national convention in Tampa.....
Not surprisingly, this didn't sit well with many of the attendees.
....Not everyone was allowed to join in the fun. All three members of Iowa's conservative RNC delegation – party chairman A.J. Spiker and committee members Steve Scheffler and Kim Lehman – attempted to enter the reception but were rebuffed after refusing to sign the delegate pledge. The dispute became heated in the hallway outside, with the Iowans demanding to know why they had to sign a form to get their picture taken with the former Massachusetts governor.....
This is yet more evidence that he will take conservatives for granted even more than he already has, unless we make him earn our votes.

Martha,

So you think this is good?

This is bad politics by the Romney campaign.

Do you not think he needs these people in November to have a better chance of winning?

He blew off the Iowa party chairman. Do you see Iowa as an important state in the general? I do. He might need Iowa in November to have a shot.

I agree with RW here - MR MR

I doubt this is unprecedented by either party, by any candidate. - Moi

RW, I do not see this as anything unusual or unreasonable. Sorry.

I also think it's ridiculous for you to keep saying Romney needs to 'earn your vote'. Romney already earned the nomination. Now it's time for people to shut the heck up about his negatives and start talking positively, or we get 4 more years of BO.

Conservatives have 2 choices in Nov, and if they don't want Obama, they'd better get happy with Mitt real fast--no matter how much they don't like it.

It just seems to be real clear to me.

RW, one more thing. It just seems to me that the only people talking about Mitt needing to earn their vote are the sore losers.

Everyone else will be on board with smiles on their faces. You watch.

We're witnessing the REDSTATIFICATION of Right Speak. Started happening once Romney wrapped up the nomination. RW increasingly cross-posts to Erick Erickson's notoriously anti-Romney blog. Surprise, surprise. The old adage applies: "Consider the source."

If Romney shakes hands for photos without the people signing a loylaty pledge they could use that photo against him. What is wrong with him requiring that? NOTHING! I bet the other candidates do the same thing. This is a ridiculous post, give us some REAL NEWS!

If you really are a delegate, why would you mind signing a delegate pledge. I don't get it.

Good point Nemesis, they are going to take over.

RW--

Thanks for A) putting such obnoxious headlines on your posts, and B) being such a douchebag.

It makes it very easy for me to not waste time reading your drivel. Great work, brother.

Of for Chrisake...Why should Romney bother to try to earn your vote? You will just keep right on finding dumb things to complain about anyway..

BTW, I have talked to people who have actually met Romney and none of them said anything about anything like this. It is dumb.

Yes, and I'll keep cross posting to Redstate. You know why? Because it only takes about 5 minutes to copy and paste the post, and it reaches a much bigger audience.

Who knows? It may even result in some extra traffic for Right Speak. Bosman would probably know.

Finally, if you don't like my posts, don't effing read them! Got it, Graham?

One last thing, Rombots....

Your guy likely won. Quit you damn whining, get off your asses, and go volunteer for his campaign, or something. YOU got us into this mess. He's going to need YOUR help.

RW...Before posting this, did you check out whether this kind of thing is common practice, abnormal, etc., so we could have some context?

Or did you just rush to the presses?

"you're guy likely won" ?

It's not likely, RW.

Fine, Martha. Open your checkbook, and send him some dough.

Have you volunteered for his campaign in Oregon yet?

In the world of politics a photo-opt brings the possibility of abuse and/or misuse. Thus any politician is within their rights to set the parameters they choose for this opportunity. This is another useless story that is far from being newsworthy. And in regards to the mess we are in, it's highly unlikely the mess you refer to anywhere close to the shipwreck on the other side.

Funny the view of things. "YOU got us into this mess," is RWNs point of view. I see it more like, "We're finally getting out of the mess!"
