Jeb Bush endorses Mitt Romney

You can marvel at the risk averseness of a pol who endorses a presidential candidate only after his nomination is effectively sewn up, but former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush’s stamp of approval is a big moment for Mitt Romney. His statement read:

Congratulations to Governor Mitt Romney on his win last night and to all the candidates for a hard fought, thoughtful debate and primary season. Primary elections have been held in thirty-four states, and now is the time for Republicans to unite behind Governor Romney and take our message of fiscal conservatism and job creation to all voters this fall. I am endorsing Mitt Romney for our Party’s nomination. We face huge challenges, and we need a leader who understands the economy, recognizes more government regulation is not the answer, believes in entrepreneurial capitalism and works to ensure that all Americans have the opportunity to succeed.

Indeed, Jeb Bush was playing it safe, but even he understands that race is effectively over now. It's time to implement the mercy rule of high school baseball. After Louisiana and Pennsylvania, Romney will just run up the score.

He also knows he cannot now jump in at a brokered convention and scoop up an easy nom.

So bully for him for doing the right thing for the wrong reason!

Or you can look at it as Jeb is putting a gavel down on a primary that finally needs to come to an end. His endorsement before the FL Primary wouldn't have been as useful, and Romney proved he could win without the assistance.

Obviously, he doesn't need the assistance now, but what the GOP needs is for the primary season to wrap up and begin fundraising for the GE. Romney's campaign has already wiped the "etch-a-sketch" clean of his primary opponents and is now going to solely concentrate on defeating Obama.

My take: We've got Bush Sr. and Barbara endorsing Mitt. If G.W. and Jeb endorsed too soon, it would appear that Mitt was the Bush dynasty's puppet.

Better late than never. Maybe speed the close of the race so Romney can start saving some money for Obama. It all helps. Welcome aboard Jeb!
