Romney Commits Another Truth "Gaffe"

Did you catch this accidental moment of sincerity?
You know, it's very easy to excite the base with incendiary comments. We've seen throughout the campaign if you're willing to say really outrageous things that are accusative, attacking of President Obama, that you're going to jump up in the polls. I'm not willing to light my hair on fire to try and get support. I am who I am.
Oops. Rewind. John McCormack of the Weekly Standard was flabbergasted. "Does he really think the majority of Republican voters are motivated by angry rhetoric?"

Well, yes, John. That's precisely what Romney believes and for good reason. That is why he, himself, partakes in the Obama smackdown quite often. He even entitled his book on the perception that Obama has somehow apologized for America. Romney will never be one of them, so the best he can do is give the base a steady diet of the kind of rhetoric that fuels their fire.

I think we need to define the base.

I'm part of the 'base' being that I'm an average conservative voter. But I'm not looking for angry rhetoric, or a 'one of us Christian' leader, and I don't depend on talk radio clowns or FOX news to tell me what to think. I don't necessarily want to be associated with those people.

I do think Romney realizes he often needs to appeal to the lowest common denominator, and let's face it, sometimes that bar is pretty darn low.

So, this comment made me chuckle a bit--Romney just being honest about what he thinks of that part of the base.

This is one of the reasons I support Romney.

Oh come on...one of the reasons the purists complain about Romney is his lack of anger..they want anger..they want someone who is pissed off. It is not a secret.

Thanks Martha, et al. Nice comments. Don't know why Romney still has an up-hill battle with so may folks.

I heard on the Laura Ingraham show today a former GW Bush speech writer say that this statement by Romney was "insulting" to the base, and that Mitt needs to go out and do something "bold". ummm err, you mean like his latest BOLD tax plan? or his constant BOLD references to Obama and his policies as "failures"? Degenetaylor, I think this is the "uphill battle" you are referring to.

Degenetaylor and Matt, right. It seems like most people don't even bother to learn about Romney before they start talking. It is quite the uphill battle.

This is precisely why I like Romney. I prefer a measured and controlled tone as opposed to incendiary rhetoric in a leader. When Romney does raise the rhetoric to a fiery level, it is usually more effective because it is rare occurrence.

Matt...and yet these same people complained that Bush did not fight back more or that he turned the cheek too often. No, it is not an insult.

It's a winning comment in the long run. He has to periodically signal the moderates, right of center people, and conservative democrats that he isn't a Rushbot. The only slight mistake was referring to the fringe as the base. The polling showed that the "base" is down to 12%.
