Romney Arizona Campaign Co-Chair Accused of Having Mexican Sex Slave, Resigns From Campaign; Update

I don't know what effect this will have on the upcoming Arizona GOP primary, but since he was Romney's Arizona Campaign Co-Chair, it deserves a mention. The reasons for his departure aren't exactly clear. Draw your own conclusions.
We are finding out that Sheriff Paul Babeu, an Arizona Sheriff, is stepping down as Arizona Co-Chair Of Mitt Romney’s Presidential Campaign. Did the Mitt Romney campaign ask him to step down after Paul Babeu has been accused of having a Mexican Sex Slave and threatening to deport him? Or did the Mitt Romney campaign ask Babeu to step down due to alleged gay activities?

What people do behind closed doors is their own business but the timing of the Romney people doing away with the their own Arizona Co-Chair right before a Republican Primary election is very very strange.....
Update: According to The Hill, Babeu denied the allegations, and admittted that he's gay. He's running in the GOP primary against Rep. Paul Gosar, and vows to stay in the race. Good luck with that.
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, a Republican running for the nomination in Arizona’s 4th district, announced today he is gay and said he is stepping down as a co-chairman of the Romney for President campaign in Arizona. He also said he would continue his race for Congress....

meh, good for Romney to get ahead of this but really this is a non-issue.

Hot Air has a story on it now...citing a CNN story. Apparently, it was common knowledge that this guy is gay? Am I the only one who didn't know this?

He's also a candidate for Congress.

RW - Funny that you have time to comment on this story when you can't defend your BS story below about Romney and the Olympics. You have no core.

RW, If I had a drudge siren, I would use it for you. After 357 anti-Romney non-issue posts, you finally found your scandal!

Too bad it has nothing to do with Romney, though, other than his team should have known beforehand that the guy lacked character and was posting inappropriate pics on gay websites.

Gee. who would have thunk that RW would post this. Of course, it might pale next to Todd Palin and his little 'masseuse' issues.

That's a fairly important detail to miss for a campaign as well organized as Romney's. No?

Right Wingnut said...

Are you guys saying I shouldn't have posted this? Everyone else is. This definitely qualifies as news...at least as much as the political affiliations of Santorum's uncle in Italy.

Anonymous said...

Well, no not really. Since he is stating it isn't true.

Right Wingnut said...

By the way, Martha, nowhere in the past, or the comment section did I blame Romney. Having said that, I did not know about the pics on the gay websites you spoke of. That's certainly an interesting twist.

Right Wingnut said...

edit: "nowhere in the post"

Don't mean to burst your bubble RW but I'm afraid that Romney wouldn't want to keep you as a sex slave.

Anonymous said...

RW, We're supposed to believe you didn't post this as a slam on Romney? LOL

Romney runs a tight ship, but nobody can know everything. Romney fixed it fast, though didn't he? Unlike some other candidates who have had problems with staff and chairs. Romney isn't afraid to 'fire' anyone!

RWN:

You are reaching..this reminds of the way people went after Sarah Palin every time something went wrong anywhere near her. This guy is a sheriff right? Well, was Romney supposed to assume he was a pervert or something.

BTW, I heard some interesting poll numbers today..In Mass Romney is at 64%...In PA Santorum is at 16% and Romney is at 29%.

Terrye said...

And btw, since Ed Morrisey over at Hot Air finally decided to endorse someone and picked the last non Romney guy standing, Santorum, they have doubled down on their ABR hit list.

They have no objectivity or credibility when it has to do with anything associated with Romney.

Right Wingnut said...

No reaching. Just reporting the news.

Slick-Willy said...

RW -

You're not interested in posting news. You're purely concerned w/smearing Romney. If you were an objective news spreader as you claim to be now, we'd have seen a lot on Santorum's issues, which are many. You don't post those stories.

You also certainly try to morph into an analyst when it benefits your objective of negatively portraying Romney. And you never repudiate or defend your dishonest claims when they've been demonstrated false.

You're nothing but a witless coward and dishonest hack at this point.

Terrye said...

This is not really news, it is gossip..It is news the way it was news when Sarah Palin's daughter got pregnant. I don't think you probably thought that was something that everyone needed to talk about now did you?

Right Wingnut said...

You guys are truly nuts, I'm sorry to say. I've never seen such a group of whining babies as you guys. With all of the anti- Santorum posts that get posted here, THIS is what sends you over the edge? Get a freaking grip, people.

Slick-Willy said...

No RW, this is small time. Even newsworthy. I've only posted on this topic because you happen to be here after fleeing from your lies in previous posts. And since you continued to lie here in your rebuttals I thought I'd take a jab.

Your vast dishonesty in your 2002 Olympics post was what caused my weekly cup of RWN BS to overflow. You are the most cowardly, dishonest blogger I'm familiar with. But I'm not really a blogger, so my sample size is small.

I didnt know he was gay either. I only know he was a good sheriff. Oh well..life goes on!

Machtyn said...

RWN, for the record, you weren't the only one to not know this. Granted, I'm in KY and only really care that voters get out in other states for Romney.

I think you missed a third question in your post though. The absence of this question is from your anti-Romney slant, but you are were you stand (this is not meant as an insult). The third question that could be asked is "Did Babeu voluntarily step down when allegations came out?" Not always are people forced out of a position.

In any case, this seems to be a vile hit piece along the same vein as what took Cain out of the race. (Just where are those Cain accusers now?)

Also, does this reflect badly on the Romney campaign? I don't think so. It is currently illegal in most states to discriminate hires based on race, religion, sexual orientation, etc.

Right Wingnut said...

Machtyn,

The story doesn't say, but I would guess that Romney's campaign asked him to resign. Feel better?

RW, Both the WaPo & NYT have stories on this which are supposed to have pics of the sheriff & his slave. Apparently, it's been out since Thursday. Hummmmm....

http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/arizona-sheriff-facing-allegations-of-misconduct-forced-to-publically-announce-he-is-gay/2012/02/18/gIQAgqCPMR_story.html?tid=pm_pop

Here are the pics from the original Phoenix New Times article:

http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/2012-02-16/news/paul-babeu-s-mexican-ex-lover-says-sheriff-s-attorney-threatened-him-with-deportation/

Finally, the NYT article:

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/19/us/politics/romney-official-in-arizona-steps-down-after-accusation.html?_r=1&hp

So, inquiring minds would like to know why this story had a lid put on it until after the Maine Caucus was finished. What effect might it have had in Maine & now the upcoming Michigan primary. This, at least, shows Team Romney is not vetting their suregates & supporters well. As to the lid job, well, that's anyone's guess at this point.

Your mention here is well after the prime article came out on Thursday. The Romulans of course will vent their anger on you. Rather juvenile don't you think?

Oops, forgot this link from azcentral.com:

http://www.azcentral.com/members/Blog/azdc/155462

I would glean from this it took two days before Babeu resigned his post with Team Romney. Looks like they let him fall on his sword.

Nothing like a salacious sex scandal & colluding with Democratic lawmakers for Mitt to parse his way out of in this caper:

"Openly gay Tucson state Representative Matt Heinz was one of two Democratic lawmakers who broke ranks with the party in March 2011 and voted to give Babeu $5 million to combat border violence. Other lawmakers opposed the measure, in part, because Babeu's county is at least 70 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border. The measure finally was pared down to $1.7 million and passed by the Legislature."

So Martha, did I provide you with enough links this time? Do you need more?

The more you folks here smear Santorum, the more blowback you're gonna get from the "Man upstairs." Keep going all, keep going.

Trust Romney now? The same strong arm tactics he uses in his campaign are now on full display in AZ, as his staffer tries to threaten his ex gay lover into silence. It's no wonder that Romney chose Babeau to co-chair his AZ campaign... They are two peas from the same pod.

"Too bad it has nothing to do with Romney, though, other than his team should have known beforehand that the guy lacked character and was posting inappropriate pics on gay websites." Haha, that is what you said about the aspirin joke. But notice how Mr. Santorum has risen in the polls since that joke. Ya gotta love it.

@ Anon 8:01...Shailey Tripp's book will be out next month where she tells her story regarding her affair with Todd in great detail. She describes physical attributes that on one would know unless they have been with Todd. She also reports about how corrupt Wasilla Sheriffs depart is. So far, no denial from Sarah. Of course, she never denies any of the truth that has been told by Dunn, Bailey or McGinnis. One would think she would have multiple law suits in the works. I cannot wait for the HBO movie.

I live in Arizona, and my husband and I just heard of this yesterday, for your information. My husband actually knows Babieu quite well, having attended many meetings of a group where Babieu is also a member. I don't believe it was commonly known that Babieu is gay, although there probably were people who knew it. My husband did not.

Of course, Babieu is facing his own scandal and needs to deal with it; the Romney campaign was correct in making sure Babieu is not working for them any more. That being said, who cares that Babieu is gay? The only questions that we have is about the legality of his behavior. Just because a story is salacious does not make it true. I guess we'll just see how the cookie crumbles on this one.

By the way, it is true that Babieu's county is 70 miles inside the border; however, there is a "wilderness area" that runs from the border to about 30 miles outside of Phoenix. The law officers are forbidden to patrol it because it is a "wilderness area" but drug cartels and criminals, as well as your run of the mill illegals have no such compunction. This is the area that the Obama Administration put a sign outside of warning Americans that they enter at their own risk. Babieu has been trying to fight back, which hasn't exactly made him popular with the go-along-to-get-along people. People who support open borders HATE him. That would certainly be motivation to take him out with a sex scandal.

I'm not saying he's innocent, I just don't think he should be convicted until he is proven guilty.
