Do many voters have a death wish?

It seems that in many of the polls, they ask the following question or a facsimile:
Regardless of how you intend to vote in 2012, which one of these candidates do you think has the best chance of beating Barack Obama in the general election in November 2012?
In many instances, The candidate who wins this category, doesn't do quite as well with the same folks who picked someone else in the GOP.

Case in point, the latest CBS News/New York Times Poll for the GOP nomination in New York:

For the GOP Nomination, the results were:

Rick Santorum 30%

Mitt Romney 27%
Ron Paul 12%
Newt Gingrich 10%

Now when asked who has the best chance of beating Barack Obama, these where the results:

Mitt Romney 55%

Newt Gingrich 15%
Rick Santorum 14%
Ron Paul 3%

I'm going to suggest to all polling companies that ask versions of the above two questions in the same poll, that they add the following question:

Please answer the following if you voted differently as to who you support versus who you believe will win:

How many of these apply to you:

1. I have sado-masochistic tendencies
2. I suffer from thoughts of suicide
3. I really want the opposing candidate to win in the General election
4. I never claimed to be the brightest bulb on the tree
5. ALL OF THE ABOVE

What do you think of the idea?

or #5 - "I heard Rush Limbaugh say there's no real difference between Romney and Obama, so Tea Baggers like myself should vote for ABR, even if ABR has very little chance of defeating Obama. Since I'm a bleeping dumbazz who can't think for himself, I just do whatever Rush tells me to do. So I'll be voting for ABR. You want fries with that?"

We Rombots has been starring in puzzlement at the ABR logic for years.

That's why we often wonder what's going on and what the real agenda is?

Are we trying to fire Obama or tell the other half of the GOP that we hate them and engage in ethnic cleansing by going on a witch, I mean RINO, hunt...

I think that a lot of these people think Romney will win anyway. In so many of these polls if you ask, Who will get the nomination..the answer is Romney..so it is as if they do not see the connection between how they vote and who gets the nod.

The idea of Rick Santorum going up against Barack Obama is just too awful to contemplate. Obama will wipe up the floor with him and he can yell his way through every debate..won't matter.

Santorum's comments on the evils of contraception will be one of many .44 caliber bullet holes in the bottom of his dinghy, fired by the U.S.S. Obama machine.

The guy is just flat-out wrong for us, when we have Romney in the mix.

Terrye: Good point on the "my vote doesn't really count" idea. Unfortunately, that is the vast attitude of most Americans, Democrat or Republican.

I think for Republicans, we have this idea that our vote doesn't count because the Democrats bring out their dead, the unions bus in idiots and tell them how to vote, and they've got thugs guarding polling areas. To be fair, Democrats have this idea that "Corporations" buy the Republican candidate's office and so their vote never really counts.

Though, as we saw in MN and CO, the inevitability theory falls on its face when people fail to show up. (You know what? Romney is honest like that - he doesn't cheat.)

I believe the theory that Rush needs someone like Obama in the White House to rail against daily. There is a method to his madness and he wants his followers to beleive he cares about the direction of this country. Rush/Beck/Palin/Levin all make tons of money writing books about how horrible this country has become. They make so much money that they are not affected by the policies on a daily basis. People have to wake up to blindly following people like Rush/Palin..gawd..........

I completely agree with you.

Bosman, you're pandering to your crowd, "Rombo's," again here. When common sense & logic can't persuade, you go to intimidation & bullying. Sorry, that isn't going to work for the average voter. Works well here as the comments above show.

Now, the proof is in the polling, for Santorum is ahead of Romney in Michigan. This is fact, not mental projection:

http://hotair.com/archives/2012/02/16/three-new-mi-polls-show-santorum-with-lead/

You're just going to have to reconcile in your mind that voters are taking an opposing view to yours. Like it or not, it is the Truth. The wisdom of crowds will prevail in the end.

LionHead,

"The wisdom of crowds will prevail in the end."

What wisdom?

Support someone that you believe CAN'T WIN?

That's wisdom?

Did you even bother to read the post?

The only thing you may be correct about is the people have a right to waste their vote!

BTW,

As to your posting these poll updates on Santorum:

When Romney overtake THIS FLAVOR, I'll file your poll updates with those poll updates of: Bachman's, Perry's, Cain's, and Gingrich's

Not okay language, anon at 8:35!

There does seem to be some disconnect going on here. Hopefully, people will use their brains and vote better than the polls show.

I agree that Santorum has some REALLY big problems especially with women voters. This is not something that will magically go away. I did see one of the t.v. ads about Santorum's record of big gov't spending. I think it was a Romney or a Romney pac ad, but I missed the end. If people are offended by an ad like that, they must have hearts for brains. This was a policy ad, not a personal one in any way. Most voters will be okay with it.

Bosman, What you're missing is the United States is set up as a Republic. It's the voters who will decide who wins, who loses. People that 'think' they know more than the public because of their education, background, connections, or money, aka "the ruling elite" are whining themselves into despair right now. They cannot believe the events unfolding before their eyes.

When this campaign is over, I suspect many of these folk will be amazed because the ways of the past that were used to swing votes to their candidates no longer works. In the end, the truth will always prevail over those that seek to manipulate people.

As to your last remark, we shall see. I have faith in the voters, you seek only to control them.

"In the United States today, we have more than our share of the nattering nabobs of negativism."

Spiro Agnew, Speech, San Diego, Sept 1970.

You know what happened in the end to this man. Don't follow his footsteps.

Similar thinking:

I think I'll go play chicken with an 18 wheeler.

I like to play chicken.

I'll probably end up in a full body cast or a body bag.

LionHead,

I'll really feel bad for you when Romney wins both Michigan & Ohio and most of the states on Super Tuesday.

Don't bother looking in the bottom of the barrel where you and the ABR's found Santorum.....THERE'S NO ONE LEFT!!!!

"A Vote Is A Terrible Thing To Waste

I heard a call yesterday on Hugh Hewitt that stunned me. The guy said that in the end he wanted Romney to win, but that he had sent money to Santorum and voted or was voting for him, so that Romney would be a tougher candidate against Obama. Hugh warned him that this is a dangerous game to play. I agree. We will end up with Rick who is COMPLETELY unprepared to face Obama if people play this game. Crazy. Just crazy!
