Crisis in Syria

The United States has been loosing the PR battle in the Middle East for far too long. While anti-western powers such as Russia, China, and Venezuela have moved to keep the murderous Asad regime in power, the United States is still seen as the "Great Satan" to most Arabs. While their leaders beg for direct intervention by NATO and her allies the people still burn effigies of our leaders and our flag. With aid starting to arrive in Syria from the West we should have our propaganda accompany the thousands of tons of medical and food stuffs that will begin to sustain the Syrian people daily. We need to let the Syrian people know that it is China and Russia in the UN that continue to block western intervention and it is they, along with Venezuela, that give aid to the Asad regime causing the deaths of untold thousands. We have been thrown under the bus all to often by the Muslim world and we have yet to address the grievances.

In summary, we should condemn the Asad regime as the corrupt dictatorship it is and move against the regime with everything short of direct military intervention. If there is to be a military option it is high time that the Arab league takes some action and responsibility for it's hemisphere. Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and other friendly gulf powers can more than shoulder the responsibility of Asad's Syria. If they ignore the Syrian people we should expose them for their callus impotence with our humanitarian mission. We can't police the world nor should we. There are simply too many wrongs to right and they are all too complicated. Direct intervention only invites anti-American sentiment and unnecessary American deaths. Our great might has always been our humanitarian missions and distribution knowhow. In the spirit of Herbert Hoover who successfully fed millions of Russians daily during the great Russian famine we too can persuade millions to trust us once again as the generous humanitarians we are.

In his book, No Apology, Mitt Romney makes the case for an urgent need for the USA to exercise "soft power" which is doing exactly what you recommend here. Do good works, and concurrently teach people who we are and what we stand for--positive propaganda is another way to say it.

Thanks for posting this Mr. Nemo. The situation over there is not good.

dgenetaylor, you beat me to it. "No Apology" covers this topic in at least one very extensive chapter of the book. Romney understands this issue (he's the complete package, people).
