Newt really is the anti-Romney

Comparing and contrasting Newt and Mitt is a real eye-opener. The two men have taken very different paths in their personal and professional lives, and have wildly different personalities. Newt is a dreamer, Mitt a doer. Newt is reckless, Mitt is careful. Newt is famously undisciplined, Mitt is the epitome of self-discipline. Romney is a leader, Newt simply is not–according to those who worked most closely with him. Both men are intelligent, yet have chosen different ways to use their intelligence.

In education, Romney pursued business and law, while Newt chose modern European History. Romney earned his education quickly and entered the private sector, while Newt preferred academia.

Romney went on to a successful career in business, becoming wealthy helping businesses and creating jobs, while Newt made a career in government, becoming wealthy by exploiting his position of power and selling influence. Romney's skills were in high demand in the private sector, while Newt was removed from leadership in the House due to the chaos he created.

In matters of faith, Romney is a life-long member of his church and has a record of many years of service to it. Newt went from Lutheran to Baptist, to Catholic, with some speculation of political motive in making the conversions. I am not aware of service Newt may have given to his church.
In their personal lives, they could not be more different. Mitt married his high school sweetheart after 4 years of courtship, and remains happily married. Newt also married his high school sweetheart - his geometry teacher whom he began dating at age 16. He has admitted that there is some truth in the notion that he hates women. He has a turbulent marital history due to selfishness and uncontrolled sexual appetites. While Romney helped Ann through both MS and cancer, Newt divorced Jackie, who had cancer–saying she was ‘not pretty enough or young enough to be a president’s wife–and besides she has cancer’. Newt divorced Marrianne, who was also diagnosed with MS. At the time, he asked Marrianne if she would please tolerate the six year affair with Callista, and remain married to him. She refused. He married Callista in 2000.

In matters of character, the contrast is keen. Romney has no hint of scandal–personal or professional. Newt has rumors of sexual scandals–including the infamous oral sex in a car with his neighbor's wife, while his little daughter was near. Newt also has a history of ethics violations, shady book deals, sham fundraising practices, and inconsistencies about whether he was hired as an ‘historian’ or as a lobbyist.

In the presidential campaign, they have also chosen very different paths. Romney is serious, organized, hardworking and prepared, while Newt has been flying by the seat of his pants. He now finds himself in the running, but unprepared, due to a severe lack of preparation and organization. While Romney has been mostly humble about his long term frontrunner status, Newt proclaimed himself the nominee after less than two weeks at the top of the polls.

There are many other differences--too many to list here. But we easily know enough to determine who is more worthy of support. We should not divorce the way a man lives in his personal life, from his actions in public life. Character is revealed in both professional and personal decisions. Romney has a solid record of being true to his word, family, and stewardships. Newt does not. While both men have significant accomplishments, only one has the background, character, leadership and temperament we need. That person is Mitt Romney.

Martha,

Excellent post!

My only problem is when you said that Newt preferred academia. What you should have said was that he was an untenured professor at West Georgia College who couldn't get promoted because he was too lazy to publish anything. Since then, he has published 23 books, none of them peer reviewed. He is a factory of unvetted and terrible ideas. But I digress.

You really hit the nail on the head with this one. Newt is a complete and utter dirtball. And I can safely say that I am not getting caught up in the heat of close presidential race when I say that. I have made such remarks long before Newt was even thought to have a chance. Newt is a horrible human being and if the Republican Party decides that he is a better choice than Romney, then it is going to cause me to reevaluate what values I share with those kinds of voters.

These distinctions are fantastic...let's hope Newt starts getting some articles written about him that show him in every unfavorable light...Heaven knows Romney has had his fair share of hit pieces written on him the last 4 years...imagine if Newt had been riding high from day one. The tea party would have had him or lunch as well. Newt is benefitting from the fact that most of us never gave Newt a solid look...and unfortunately, time is not on our side.

"Newt is benefiting from the fact that most of us never gave Newt a solid look" True, but many of us who are Gen X or older are rather familiar with him already for better or worse.

OJ, I was surprised at how much I had forgotten, or didn't know about Newt. The refresher has been enlightening.

of course Mitt Romney would be the best, and i hope he will be the nominee, however we by all means have to kick Obama off the WH, therefore even a peculiar personality like Gingrich could be suitable in order to send the present boss away. We can afford 4 or 8 years of the Georgian, and later we could have a better President, of course not a Democrat any more : first defeating the present one.

I disagree with you regarding Newt being suitable enough to send Obama packing.

If by some miracle Newt did win the presidency...it would be the end of the GOP. Newt will do the same as Nixon did to the GOP's brand. Newt would be disastrous as president if his leadership of the House is any indication. Newt is a corrupt politician who is no conservative. He is big government all the way and he lacks the discipline to be President. I fear his time in office will be plagued with scandels. Why can't the GOP pick a reliable, moral conservative?

Great post! Wish more people could see the HUGE gap between Gingrich and Romney. The two men are so completely opposite as you've stated here. Wake up America and get behind our future president. I really believe Romney is the only candidate that can beat Obama.

OJ...I'm political junkie and even I knew only the generalities of Newt's record...the research I've done over the last month has opened even my eyes. Most of my Republican associates who vote don't know a thing about Newt...and these are educated people. This line that Fox and such are spewing that he all of his baggage is already known is bunk...it helps innoculate people to reality of his record...which isn't what we want. Newt needs Romney scrutiny if he really wants to be prepared for what's to come next year, but unfortunately it doesn't seem like the conservative media feels the same way about his vetting that it does concerning Romney

Gordon, I agree. Most people--like some in my family--only listen to FOX for their 'news'. They are not inclined to investigate anything about any of the candidates, and they simply buy whatever they are fed from people they think are conservatives, and who they can trust.

Often, when I tell them something about one of the candidates, they can't believe it--they've never heard it before! They were believing the lies and half-truths about Romney on global warming, RomneyCare, etc. It's very discouraging.

Most people just don't bother to learn anything for themselves, and they just listen to Rush and co, and watch FOX. Which makes what these people do, all the more shameful.

There's no doubt who you support. You failed to mention that Mitt's "church" is Mormon. They believe that Lucifer is Jesus' brother. It is the most confused, unbiblical religion, outside of islam. Mitt is a liberal in Mass. and now feigns conservative. There's nothing conservative about him. He believes in man-made global warming. Totally unprovable but extremely taxing to any nation that buys into it. There are as many scientists who don't believe it as do believe it. Soon, you will see solar energy go the way of the Edsel. You will see windmills rust away. You will see the electric car rust away in a forgotten car lot because no one wanted one. Finally, Mitt supported abortion in Mass. and now he's pro-life. He has flipped on so many issues I don't know what he believes. He's as we say in the south, "anybody's dog that will hunt". What do you want him to be because he doesn't really have any core beliefs. I'll take Newt anyday over this charlatan.

Anon at 10:36 p.m.:

People on this site are free to speak their minds, but not to slime someone else's religion. For your information, I am a Mormon, too. My religion is probably the best thing that has ever happened to me, and as I believe it to be the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, it is the best thing that ever happened to this world second only to the birth, sacrifice, and resurrection of Jesus. You are the one who has the problems. And you don't even have the courage to sign your posts. Coward!

By the way, Merry Christmas!

Great post, Martha. Pablo, I liked your comment as well. There is a reason that Newt was the last resort of the "Not Romney" flavor-of-the-Month seekers. He was the dirtiest, the one with the most negative baggage attached to him. While I have always appreciated Newt's intellect, I think that I finally understand why such a tainted individual could be prefered by some over Romney. Mitt Romney is too good for them, or, rather, for their preconceived notion of what a Mormon is. The last thing they want is a too-good-to-be-true Romney at the President's pulpit, threatening their influence while they try to convince the public that Mormons are not to be trusted or tolerated. To them, a seemingly clean, honest, dynamic, and capable leader like Mitt could not, must not be a Mormon. To them, It is a Satanic illusion, one that would put a falsely good face on Mormonism. So, the illusion must be destroyed before it destroys others. Only they are supremely frustrated in that they can not find anything of substance to use against him. As an LDS member myself, I apologize if this sounds like a persecution complex on my part. It is not. I am merely trying to intellectualize a truly puzzling phenomenon. By the way, I very much appreciated the Sioux City Journal endorsemnent of Mitt Romney. So there is, after all, some sanity left in the world, and thank you, SCJ.

I did leave a comment and it wasn't published. Is there a problem with the free exchange of ideas? When any book claims to be a "new revelation" of the bible, it is suspect and bogus. The bible says add nothing to this book or take nothing away from it as it is the inspired written word of God. Prayerfully consider that Joseph Smith went out in a gun fight, killing some of his would be aprehenders. He had seen a vision by an angel, he said, named "Maroni" and that this is God's new revelation to man. This is not meant to "slime" any religion but either the bible is true or it is not. All the disciple except John, who wrote Revelation, died either by crucifixion or beheading. Smith died in a shootout. You decide who you think should be believed.
I tried using my name and it didn't publish so I'll keep in anonymous.

Before you spout accusations against the faith of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, you might try having a conversation with a few of them. We don't bite, really! And we are happy to answer any legitimate questions you may have about what we believe. I suspect you have gotten your information from someone not of our faith who has twisted it so that you have said the things you have in your post. There are many who wish to destroy our church who publish information that is patently false, some of which you have repeated here. There is no sense in going on the defensive trying to refute your claims. But I would encourage you to make some genuine inquiries, seeking your information from people who are not out to tell falsehoods about our faith. Don't worry, nobody in our church is going to brainwash you.

It is really annoying how every post/article about Mitt Romney ends with a pointless religious war. Can't we see that this is all irrelevant to being president?

As an ex-mormon myself, I don't really buy into their beliefs but I know that Mitt Romney is a good man and leader. His well disciplined business experience is what our country needs right now. All this religious discussion distracts us from the importance of saving this country from another 4 years of Obama.

Most of the comments on this site do talk about politics, and rarely do the comments degenerate into religious distractions. Unfortunately, Anon up there decided to declare him- or her- self an expert on Mitt's religion. Even more unfortunate is the fact that Anon is actually clueless about it. I hope you don't blame us for trying to set the record straight.

I have alwways wanted to meet a "fly on the wall" and now apparently I have at least ready the details. Nice to know that you were there when Newt was married to wife #1 and #2. Funny though, I have never heard him make even one negative comment about either woman and unless they were candidates for sainthood, they must have had some small flaw. Or perhpas Newt is a gentleman. I find it mindboggling to hear you comment about his sexual appetite. No I think not a fly on the wall, but rather another Mitt Romney hit job scribbler! Can he not just have his minions talk up his good qualities and leave the other candidates alone? That would be the decent and yes moral way to go.
